Holger Preuss is Professor of Sport Economics and Sport Sociology at the Johannes Gutenberg-University in Mainz, Germany and also at the Molde University College, Norway in Event Management. He is also adjunct professor at the University of Ottawa, Canada and international scholar at the State University of New York (SUNY, Cortland). Holger studied sport science and economics in Göttingen and taught at the German Sport University in Cologne as well as at the University of Frankfurt.
He was Editor of the Journal “European Sport Management Quarterly” until 2014, one of the world leading journals in sport management. He also is associate Editor of the “Journal of Sport & Tourism”. Additionally he serves as editorial board member of several other international Journals such as “International Journal of Sport & Finance”, “Sport Management Review”, “International Journal of Sport Policy” and “Scandinavian Sport Studies”.
He has published 18 books and more than 70 articles in international journals and books. During the past decade he has been invited to hold more than 130 presentations all over the world.
His field of research is directed at economic and socio-economic aspects of sport. In particular he looks into the economic impact analysis of mega-sport events such as Olympic Games, since 1972 and the FIFA Football World Cup, since 2006. Holger just finished his research regarding the economic importance of sport for Germany by conducting surveys about sport consumption, sponsoring and media rights as well as sport infrastructure. He is highly experienced in large quantitative research projects.
Currently he looks into the Olympic Movement and the perception of its values throughout societies from different cultures. Holger is also involved in another project regarding tourism and the economic impact of the FIFA Football World Cup in Brazil 2014.
In the past he has been a consultant for the Olympic bid of Frankfurt RheinMain 2012, Prague (2016/2014), Budapest (2012), Innsbruck (2014), Munich (2018) and Cairo (2020) as well as Qatar for the FIFA Football World Cup 2022 and Dubai (2020) for the World EXPO. He was also active for the Olympic hosts in Sydney 2000, Athens 2004, Turin 2006, Beijing 2008 and London 2012. Furthermore, he organizes regularly an international one day symposium during the Olympic Games.
For sport federations he is actively involved in the UIPM (Union International Pentathlon Moderne) and he serves in the ethical commission of the WFDF (World Flying Disc Federation), an IOC recognized sport organization.
