The purpose of the password is to ensure that your data cannot be accessed by others. Furthermore, it is important that your account number is not used to allow unauthorized entry to the computer. There are those clever enough to gain unlawful entry from a user account to the special system accounts that have many more rights than a user account. An example of these rights is the ability to delete all the users files. Therefore, it is important to choose a password that is not easy for others to determine.
Examples of inappropriate passwords:
- Names: your own name, names of sweethearts, spouses, neighbors, parents, children, co-workers, etc. In other words, no names.
- Telephone numbers and especially those that can be associated with you
- The name of the computer you are using
- The name of the operating system or other computer words or expressions
- Personal ID numbers/birth dates
- Any type of information that can be associated with you
- A username on the computer. This means any form of the username whether doubled, written with all capital letters, etc.
- A word in a dictionary, English, Norwegian, or other language
- The name of a place
- A particular noun
- Simple sequences of letters from the keyboard, for example, qwety
- None of the above written backwards
- None of the above with a single number in front and/or back of it
What represents a good password?
- It should include both small and capital letters.
- It should include numbers and/or special characters in addition to the letters.
- It should be easy to remember so that it doesnt need to be written down
- It should consist of at least seven/eight characters.
- It can be written quickly so that no one can see what you are writing by looking over your shoulder.
It should be easy to choose a good password. Here are some suggestions:
Put together two words that have no connection to each other and separate them with a number or special character. For example horse=carrot or new23bike
Put together a personal abbreviation.
AMUCemrls (All Molde University College employees must receive less salary) or
Idltcg (I dont like the color green).
Now horse=carrot, new23bike, AMUCemrls and Idltcg are unacceptable passwords because they have been written here.
NOTE the following limitations regarding your password when using Molde University College computers:
- Don't use the Norwegian letters: æ, ø, å
- Don't use blank spaces in the password
- When using numbers in the password you should use the numbers located on the top row of the keyboard. Do not use the numbers on the number pad on the right side of the keyboard
