Challenging the past - interpreting the present - envisioning the future

Phenomenology is a dynamic inquiry, a living methodology. Exploring the boundaries of its discipline(s) is a convergence of phenomenological insight. This convergence stimulates many questions, some of which we will explore during this conference: What main directions in phenomenological inquiry do we recognize today? How does phenomenology contribute in different fields and practices?

And how do we renew and expand phenomenology?  First and foremost, we believe, by letting the classic texts written by the primary sources; by our honoured phenomenological teachers and philosophers, profoundly influence our thinking and writing. Through reading and rereading the texts carefully, we should strive toward making original and profound contributions to phenomenological practice and research. The word discipline is rooted in Latin disciplina, meaning instructions given to a disciple.  However, what is it to be a true disciple of phenomenology? Does it mean that one must ascribe to a particular discipline of phenomenology, close one’s boundaries and defend one’s position against the ideas of other phenomenological disciplines? Or, is being a true disciple one who is searching openly for practices that are expanding our notions of phenomenology, and of experience itself?

Please join us in Molde, Norway experiencing a renewing and expanding of our ideas about phenomenology. The coming together of phenomenologists from every corner of the world reflects the way that this methodology expands and contracts, diversifies and melds. We invite you to a “phenomenological experience.” Not only is this an opportunity to share your work; it is an opportunity to pay attention to the fullness of phenomenology, the various ways that phenomenologists relate to others, are in the world and think about their discipline.
