Guidelines for Self-Produced Course Literature

Guidelines for Self-Produced Course Literature

Adopted by the Study Committee on 24 May 2023.

Approval Process

When introducing self-authored course literature as the primary or sole material for a course, approval must be obtained from the faculty. If the book is published by a recognized publisher, an internal evaluation is sufficient.

A reasoned application must be submitted to the faculty via the dean well in advance of the deadline for finalising course literature for the upcoming semester (15 May and 1 November).

The faculty will obtain an opinion from an external expert within the relevant subject area. The expert is appointed by the dean. The opinion should address the quality of the proposed literature compared to competing alternatives. The expert should evaluate the academic content, presentation of the material, and its suitability relative to the structure of the course.

Based on the expert’s report, the dean will approve or deny the application.

Transitional arrangement: Applications for approval must also be submitted for self-authored literature already in use on a course. The literature may continue to be used while the application is being processed.

Obligation to Submit Self-Produced Course Literature to the National Library

According to the legal deposit requirement, all documents made publicly available in Norway must be deposited with the National Library, regardless of the medium on which they are published.

See the Legal Deposit Act (Pliktavleveringsloven) on lovdata.no.
