  The background to the study is investigating the challenges and opportunities in the working day of nurse practitioners (NPs) by being part of the interprofessional team in the emergency department. The aim of the study is to explore the NPs’ experiences with their own roles in the interprofessional collaboration that occurs in emergency departments. The method is a qualitative design and utilized six interviews with NPs in Norwegian emergency departments. The data analysis is performed using systematic text condensation, resulting in two meaningful units. The results demonstrate that nurses, in general, play a role in interprofessional collaboration in emergency departments. However, the role of NPs as clinical nurse specialists is not widely implemented in Norwegian emergency departments. The employment of NPs is typically driven by management for cost-cutting purposes. The study concludes that increased promotion of NPs in emergency departments is necessary to enhance understanding and utilization of their specialized skills. The study also suggests that employing NPs can achieve cost savings and have a significant impact on patient flow and waiting times in emergency departments.
