This project arises from a clear knowledge gap in women's health. Autism in women has been underdiagnosed, leading to late diagnosis and a lack of understanding of their life situations. Research has shown that there is limited knowledge about women and autism within both healthcare and various support systems.
We believe there is even less knowledge and competence regarding how women with autism may experience different aspects related to parenthood.
Therefore, we aim to first investigate the experiences of women diagnosed with autism in the role of mothers and how they perceive encounters with support services when in need of assistance.
Subsequently, we will explore the experiences of healthcare and social service professionals in meeting women with autism and their families.
- What experiences do professionals have concerning the needs of mothers with autism?
- Do professionals feel there is sufficient competence within the services?
- What services are currently offered, or should be offered, to women with autism?
