LOG525 Quality Management/Management for Change (Autumn 2020)
About the course
An effective business is dependent on the quality of its products or services. Through this course students receive an introduction to principles, theory, and models for managing quality – and the preparation process. Through lectures and examples students will gain insight into the fundamental differences between the Japanese and the western worlds business philosophies and principles in relationship to quality management and effectiveness. Quality management is often associated with Toyota and the development of Total Quality Management (TQM) or LEAN production. Today LEAN production is a collective term for a philosophy for an effective production system where it consists of using an organizations resources to the greatest extent in a way that activates the most value for customers. LEAN philosophy became applied as Toyota Production Management and in its earliest version was related to industrial mass production. But, LEAN philosophy receives consistently more use within service production and government operations, as for example in health service production.

The student's learning outcomes after completing the course
The course will give an introduction to important principles in Total Quality Management (TQM) and LEAN. Total Quality Management and LEAN are philosophies with accompanying basic principles, models and tools. Introduction to the philosophy requires foundations in cultural and organizational change. Central elements of the course are to understand which changes are required and how can they be implemented. TQM and LEAN are central elements in organizations that strive for continuous improvement. The course will also introduce other change models with a starting point in value chain analysis and the meaning of these will be reviewed.
The successful candidate shall with completion of this course:
- Have knowledge in the subject area.
- Can evaluate the appropriateness and application of various philosophies and methods in the design of of quality management framework.
