LOG953 Master's Degree Thesis (Spring 2022)
About the course
A thesis is an independent, extensive work that is done under the guidance of an advisor/professor in the discipline. Not more than two students can work on the same thesis. Candidates are relatively free to choose topics. A thesis can be either applied, related to a company or an agency/governmental body, or it can be a theoretical investigation.

Only those students who are enrolled in the MSc program in Petroleum Logistics can write a thesis. In addition, each candidate must have an approved proposal that has been prepared as part of LOG904. LOG953 must be the last course taken within the MSc program. Each candidate needs to have approved 90 sp according to the study program in order to have the master thesis graded.
The student's learning outcomes after completing the course
After completing the Master's thesis, the student should
- Have knowledge regarding planning and accomplishment of a scientific work
- Understand the importance of formulating precise research questions
- Understand the role of theory in research
- Choose the appropriate method for collecting relevant information and data
- Knowledge about key principles for analysis and discussion of an empirical material
- Have updated theoretical knowledge within the topic of the master's thesis
- Be able to use theory to analyze key issues within the topic of the master's thesis
Forms of teaching and learning
The master's thesis is an independent work done by a single student or two students together and supervised by a faculty advisor. It is the duty of each student to obtain a supervisor at the latest in the start of Semester 3. The supervisor will usually also supervise the proposal. Taken together with the master thesis, the student(s) are entitled to have at least 20 hours supervision, but cannot expect to have more than 40 hours supervision. The supervision includes all aspects of this process like giving advice, reading drafts and so on.

Duration: 1 Semesters
Grading scale: Letter (A - F)
Support material: All printed and written supporting material
Comment: Submission of the written thesis and an oral thesis defence are required. The final grade is a combination of grades received on the thesis and the oral presentation. Only one final grade will be presented to the student.
