Abstract Background The use of mechanical restraints (MR) in acute mental health care can cause unexpected effects on patients, such as physical injury and mental trauma, thus MR requires continuous clinical assessment and decision-making before, during, and after mechanical restraint episodes. Despite the importance of these processes, few validated instruments are available to assess health care professionals’ perceptions of restraint-related assessments during the implementation of mechanical restraints. Therefore, this pilot study aimed to develop the Mechanical Restraint Questionnaire (MR-Q) and examine its psychometric properties. Methods A cross-sectional study was conducted. The MR-Q, a self-report questionnaire designed to assess nurses’and ward staff members’perceptions of assessments related to the use of mechanical restraint, consisted of 61 items. Item development was informed by individual interviews, a clinical guideline, and a literature review. Of the 61 items, 26 addressed the practice environment and 35 addressed the caring process. Data were collected from 69 nurses and word staff working in acute mental health wards in Norway. Parallel analysis (PA), visual inspection of the scree plot and exploratory factor analysis (EFA) were performed to examine the questionnaire’s underlying factor structure. The psychometric properties of the MR-Q were further assessed through face validity, content validity, construct validity, and reliability testing of the identified subscales. Results The PA suggested a possible six-factor solution, whereas the EFA extracted two dimensions with three factors in each dimension, respectively six factors. Three factors covered the practice environment, and three factors covered the caring process. The factors accounted for 69.3% of the total variance in the practice environment and 52.0% of the total variance in the caring process. Conclusion The findings indicate evidence of an acceptable factor structure and acceptable to high internal consistency of the MR-Q as a measure of the perceptions of MR assessment. Some improvements and further investigation of the reliability and validity in a larger and heterogenous sample are needed.

This study investigates how mental health professionals working in Norwegian specialized ambulatory teams navigate complex ethical, relational, and organizational demands within fragmented care environments. Using an exploratory qualitative design, we conducted semi-structured focus group interviews with practitioners across 11 teams, including Assertive Community Treatment (ACT), acute, follow-up, and rehabilitation services. Reflexive thematic analysis yielded four interrelated themes: Anchoring Amid Chaos, Bearing Ethical Strain, Reinventing in Motion, and Sustaining Care Through Strong Relationships. These themes illustrate how professionals navigate fragmented systems by exercising moral judgment, building relational connections, improvising in real time, and coordinating informally across organizational divides. Theoretically framed by Zigon’s concept of moral breakdown, Rogers’ person-centered theory, Schön’s reflective practitioner model, Luhmann’s systems theory, and the PINCOM model of interprofessional collaboration, the study positions these practitioners as reflective mediators who uphold continuity and therapeutic integrity amid institutional fragmentation. While grounded in a specific regional context, the findings provide experience-near insights into the micro-practices that sustain recovery-oriented care within decentralized and unpredictable systems. The study highlights the need to support the anchoring role of frontline professionals by fostering ethical reflection, strengthening relational infrastructure, and enabling responsive collaboration across fragmented systems. These findings underscore the importance of recognizing the adaptive anchoring work among practitioners and offer concrete directions for training, evaluation, and policy in community-based mental health care.

Health and social care systems face increasing demands for interprofessional education and collaborative practice (IPECP) to meet complex patient needs. In response, global leaders advocate for interprofessional education (IPE) to prepare professionals for effective IPECP. An initial study conducted by the authors revealed skepticism among university educators about IPE approaches and their ability to translate into workplace practice. This prompted a follow-up study aimed at developing an evidence‑based framework to support educators in overcoming barriers to integrating meaningful IPE into curricula that bridge the theory-practice gap. A sequential mixed‑methods design, theoretically underpinned by social-innovation-informed experiential learning, enabled cumulative validity across three research strands, each published separately. Drawing on insights from both the initial and follow-up study, incorporating data from more than 220 participants, this article presents the emergent 4P Framework, which identifies four core considerations for effective IPE integration: Priority, Professional value, Professional commitment, and Person-centredness. The development of the framework is described and situated within the existing evidence base. To support practical application, the 4P Framework is mapped to an established transitions model, providing educators and leaders with a structured and theoretically aligned tool to guide IPE implementation and highlighting empirically informed areas for future research.

People experiencing co-occurring mental health problems and substance use disorders face some of the most fundamental challenges in contemporary mental health and addiction services. Despite longstanding policy commitments to integrated care, dual diagnosis care remains characterized by persistent fragmentation. Existing multilevel perspectives have advanced understanding of how stigma contributes to exclusion across healthcare systems, yet provide less guidance for explaining how continuity of care is established and sustained across interconnected institutional, organizational, and relational contexts. Drawing on a conceptual synthesis of empirical and theoretical literature, this article develops a multilevel framework integrating recognition theory, stigma theory, and ecological systems theory. The framework conceptualizes dual diagnosis care as shaped by interacting stigma- and recognition-related processes operating across macro (institutional), meso (organizational), and micro (relational) levels. Fragmentation and continuity are understood as emergent outcomes of the degree of alignment or misalignment between these processes across levels of care. Recognition is conceptualized not merely as a feature of interpersonal encounters, but as a coordinating principle through which institutional commitments, organizational arrangements, and relational practices may become aligned to support continuity, participation, legitimacy, collaboration, and trust. By extending existing multilevel perspectives beyond explanations of exclusion alone, the framework provides an analytical lens for understanding why fragmentation may persist despite policy commitments to integrated care and how continuity may emerge when recognition-supporting conditions are aligned across systems of care.

Abstract Interprofessional collaboration (IPC) is widely promoted to improve support for youth with complex and multiple needs, yet fragmented and poorly coordinated services persist. This scoping review seeks to explore how IPC has been conceptualised in social welfare services, describe factors that shape collaborative processes, and identify areas where further research is needed. Informed by complexity theory, IPC is conceptualised as a dynamic, adaptive process arising from non-linear interactions among professionals, youths, and families. A comprehensive search of five databases yielded 785 records; twenty-four studies met the inclusion criteria. Data were charted and thematically analysed, generating five themes: (1) General Characteristics, (2) The Construct of Interprofessional Collaboration, (3) Barriers and Drivers of Interprofessional Collaboration, (4) User Participation, and (5) Outcome. Findings indicate that the literature foregrounds drivers and barriers primarily from professional perspectives while offering limited clarity on IPC’s core definitions and intended outcomes. IPC is frequently treated as a ‘black box’, marked by heterogeneous terminology and uneven empirical grounding. Future research should move beyond descriptive accounts and develop approaches that foreground youth perspectives while capturing the evolving, relational dynamics of IPC.

Purpose: The healthcare sector faces complex challenges that demand a highly competent management workforce. Although considerable efforts have been made to develop management competency frameworks that provide lists of core competencies for health managers, few frameworks have undergone rigorous validity and reliability testing. The present study aimed to translate and culturally adapt the Management Competency Assessment Partnership (MCAP) tool for use in the Norwegian healthcare context and to evaluate its psychometric properties.
Methods: An eleven-step translation and cultural adaptation procedure was developed in accordance with established guidelines. A pilot study was conducted using the adapted MCAP tool with 53 healthcare managers in Norway. The resulting test scores were analyzed using inter-item correlations and exploratory factor analysis to assess the construct validity and reliability.
Results: The comprehensive translation and cross-cultural adaptation procedure contributed to the Norwegian version retained strong fidelity to the original tool. Preliminary findings demonstrated acceptable reliability and supported the construct validity of the MCAP tool test scores within the Norwegian healthcare context.
Conclusion: A rigorous translation and cross-cultural adaptation process is essential to preserve conceptual integrity when implementing assessment instruments across contexts. The preliminary findings of this study adds to previous cross-contextual validation studies using the MCAP tool, further supporting its utility as a representative framework for assessing health management competencies.

Reliable instruments are essential for studying perceptions of individuals convicted of sexual offences across cultural contexts. This study evaluates the psychometric properties of the Perceptions of Sex Offenders Scale (PSO) among Norwegian students in nursing, social education, social work, and police education (N = 282). Using confirmatory factor analysis, we tested the fit of the PSO’s original three-factor structure. The model showed mixed fit (RMSEA = .072; SRMR = .072; CFI = .86; TLI = .84). Internal consistency was satisfactory for Sentencing and Management and Stereotype Endorsement (α = .82 and .70), but low for Risk Perception (α = .53). Internal validity indices were uneven: composite reliability was acceptable for Sentencing and Management and Stereotype Endorsement (CR = .89 and .71), but not for Risk Perception (CR = .58), and AVE values were below recommended thresholds across factors, particularly for Risk Perception (AVE = .227). Free-text responses indicated that participants primarily had rape and child sexual abuse in mind when responding to the PSO. Overall, the PSO shows promise in a Norwegian student context, but the Risk Perception dimension appears to require refinement before the scale can be used confidently for research and educational purposes.

This qualitative study examines the perceptions of interprofessional collaboration among frontline workers involved in Norwegian drug courts. Using the Perception of Interprofessional Collaboration Model (PINCOM), and Goffman’s theory of front stage and backstage communication, the study explores the complexities and informal dynamics of collaboration processes. Semi-structured interviews with 16 frontline workers revealed key factors influencing collaboration, including motivation, personality style, group leadership, organizational culture, and organizational environment. Findings suggest that both formal and informal aspects of collaboration, such as physical proximity and interpersonal relationships, play significant roles in achieving successful outcomes. The study highlights the challenges of interprofessional collaboration in addressing the complex, multifaceted needs of drug court participants, and underscores the importance of continuous reflection on informal dynamics to enhance collaboration.

The increasingly complex health and social care needs of the world's population require interprofessional collaboration. Interprofessional education (IPE) can prepare students for interprofessional collaborative practice. Despite mounting evidence supporting the positive impact of IPE, it is not yet integrated into all curricula. Previous findings from university teachers have highlighted a lack of leadership support. This study investigated the views of nine senior leaders across three universities in Norway and the United Kingdom. Four themes emerged around: system approach; curriculum and learning outcomes; person-centred care; and professional identity. All leaders see the need for integration of IPE into the curricula. The introduction of IPE led to concerns amongst some who worried that students may struggle to develop their professional identity if asked to learn with learners from other professional courses too early. UK leaders highlight the need to focus on person-centred care to deflect challenges linked to engagement but also recognise the existence of well-entrenched hierarchies between professions. Participants agree that executive leadership is needed and emphasise the power of co-creation with all stakeholders. Findings will contribute to a framework, in a future publication, that can help integration of IPE into curricula.

This study draws on person-centered therapy, Bordin’s working alliance model, and the guidelines from the Norwegian Prison and Probation Service to explore how Norwegian probation officers demonstrate key relational skills during supervision. Thirteen participants from probation offices in western Norway took part in three focus groups: two with supervisees and one with probation officers. Thematic analysis revealed two key themes: (1) perceptions of inconsistent focus and (2) a cautious atmosphere of trust. While empathy emerged as a crucial factor in building a working alliance, it sometimes came at the cost of structure and planning. However, this imbalance did not necessarily undermine the sessions’ effectiveness, as trust and rapport form a strong foundation for growth. The findings highlight that balancing a strong bond with clear structure is central to effective probation supervision. This implies that probation officers should leverage relational trust to introduce structure, thereby fostering sustainable behavioral change.

Numerous studies have demonstrated that a considerable portion of prisoners in Norway are confronted with a complex life situation that necessitate comprehensive social services upon their release. This study is one of the few that offers new insights into the process of resettlement of prisoners with substance abuse issues in Norway. The study examines the experiences of prisoners (n = 9) and frontline workers (n = 9) with the support provided by welfare services during the resettlement process – within the framework of wicked problems. The previously published two substudies utilizes qualitative methods. In the present study the two substudies are used to illustrate central features of wicked problems. Prisoners find themselves in complex and unpredictable life situastions, encountering a variety of challenges during their resettlement. These challenges can be defined in multiple ways and requires involvement from several different professions. Findings are analyzed and discussed within the framework of wicked problems theory. Additionally, the paper discusses three different strategies for welfare agencies to address the challenges that prisoners face during the resettlement process.

Background
Health and social care professionals need to be equipped to work together. Universities have a duty of care to their students to incorporate interprofessional education into the curricula. Here, we present findings from focus groups to delve deeper into the issues previously identified.
Method
Three focus group interviews with teachers were conducted—two in Norway and one in the UK.
Findings
We identified four themes: Organizational commitment. Values related to students’ interprofessional and collaborative practice. Professional identity and commitment to collaborative practice. Challenges with implementing interprofessional education.
Discussion and conclusion
Educators continue to agree that interprofessional education is important, but the findings highlight the ongoing divide and uncertainty as to what to do and when to equip students for interprofessional collaboration. The educators call for the organization to show commitment and leadership so that stakeholders can come together to develop an Interprofessional education curriculum that students can sign up to. Time is of the essence, and a framework may help us here, especially if we can embrace the concept of social innovation and cocreate.

What knowledge and skills are needed to be more inclusive and to give children with disabilities a better quality of life in Tanzania and in Norway? Professional helpers, such as teachers, social educators [vernepleiere, Norwegian], and social workers are agents of change in this interprofessional and intercultural field. Students and staff involved in international exchange projects, such as with The Norwegian Agency for Exchange Cooperation (NOREC), are also agents of change in this field. Whether academics or practitioners, they all emphasize the need for new and updated knowledge across many wellestablished research fields due to the children’s multifaceted needs. This anthology introduces this diverse field of research and contributes with knowledge of children’s needs and human rights, theoretical perspectives and research approaches as well as the implications for education and practice. The book’s target group is broad, encompassing researchers, students as well as practitioners in the global south and north.
The chapters are written by international researchers and professionals working in education, health, and social work in Tanzania and Norway. Several of the chapters are the result of a collaboration between Tanzanian and Norwegian authors, and collaboration is an important subject in the book.

Aim:
This systematic review aimed to identify, describe and evaluate questionnaires measuring health professionals’ attitudes towards restraints in mental healthcare.
Design:
A systematic review was undertaken in accordance with the COSMIN protocol for systematic review and the relevant sections of the 2020 Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses.
Data Sources:
OVID Medline, OVID nursing, Psychinfo, Embase and Cinahl were systematically searched from databases inception, with an initial search in December 2021 and updated in April 2022.
Review Methods:
The inclusion criteria compromised articles reporting on self-reported instruments of attitudes or perceptions, development or validation of instruments and the evaluation of one or more measurement properties. Articles using multiple instruments in one study or not published in English were excluded. Two researchers independently extracted the data and appraised the methodological quality using the COSMIN guidelines and standards (consensus-based standards for the selection of health measurement instrument). A narrative synthesis without meta-analysis was performed. The systematic review was registered in PROSPERO Protocol ID CRD42022308818.
Results:
A total of 23 studies reporting ten instruments were included. The findings revealed a broad variation in the content of the questionnaires, the use of terms/constructs and the context in which the various instruments measure attitudes towards coercive measures. Many studies lacked sufficient details on report of psychometric properties. Finally, the results were not summarized and the evidence not GRADED.
Conclusions:
There is a need for updated and adapted instruments with origins in theory and clear joint definitions such that attitudes towards coercive measures can be reliably assessed regarding the validity and reliability of instruments, which will be of importance to facilitate the use of instruments in research and clinical settings.
Impact:
Reviews addressing surveys, self-reported attitudes towards restraints in mental healthcare and examination of psychometric properties seem limited. We highlight distinct complexity, psychometric limitations and broad variation in the context and content measuring attitudes towards coercive measures, and their various use of terms/constructs in the existing questionnaires. These findings contribute to further research regarding the development of questionnaires and the need of representing the concept well – carefully denoted by the indicators, likewise the importance of applying questionnaires with properly reported measurement properties in terms of validity and reliability to ensure the use in research and clinical settings.

Children’s effective participation seems to be difficult to achieve in practice. Although the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child came into force in 1989, recent research reports that effective participation rarely occurs. This qualitative study explores a group of adolescents’ views on participating in child welfare ‘responsibility teams’ (RTs) in Norway. The two specific foci are experiences regarding influence on their own situation and how the RT model may be a useful way to ensure children’s right to participate. The study concludes that RT alone cannot ensure children’s right to participate in the form of effective participation and that professional competencies are also important. The study calls for further research, especially on children and adolescents’ own experiences with RTs.

In this chapter we present the core role model, intended for reflection in professional work. The model consists of two dimensions, which in turn describe four types of helper roles (partner, directive, bridge-builder, and driver). We invite the reader to discuss how these four helper roles may be used in a flexible way in working with children with disabilities. In addition, we discuss whether and how the core role model may be implemented in an African setting.

Objective: The Perception of Interprofessional Collaboration-Model Questionnaire (PINCOM-Q) measures professionals’ perceptions of interprofessional collaboration in the field of child and youth mental health. The aim of this study was to validate the PINCOM-Q in a sample of German child welfare and child and youth mental health professionals. Methods: The PINCOM-Q was translated into German and its underlying factor structure was examined using exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis. Results and discussion: Findings from this study suggest four factors (Interprofessional Climate, Conflict, Role Expectancy and Shared Goals, and Motivation) capture the concept of perceptions of interprofessional collaboration between child welfare and child and adolescent psychiatry. Conclusion: The use of PINCOM-Q (German) can be recommended as a research tool, investigating professional groups working with children and young people with multiple and complex needs. Keywords: child welfare, child and adolescent psychiatry, interprofessional collaboration, validation, measurement

Reintegration after prison for prisoners with interlinked welfare needs has been one of the most challenging issues for decades in the criminal justice system. The WHO and the UN highlight the demand for well-functioning collaboration between professionals and welfare agencies handling these challenges. However, interprofessional collaboration has been an underdeveloped field of research and theory, especially concerning prisoners with substance abuse issues. The present study undertakes a scoping review of research on interprofessional collaboration in reintegration after prison for prisoners with substance abuse issues, particularly identifying factors that influence collaboration. Nineteen included studies from the USA, the U.K., Australia, and Norway show that relational and structural factors influence collaboration and that innovative projects are perceived as improving collaboration. A tentative conceptual model of factors that influence collaboration is presented and may serve as a basis for reflection and further development of a theoretical framework within the field of research.

An increased knowledge of innovation depends on high-quality research. However, what aspects of innovation impact positive outcomes for different actors? New insights call for the development of research methodology to be used to explore and investigate the phenomenon of innovation, i.e., processes and outcomes. In this paper, our aims are to a) describe the development of a conceptual model of social innovation at the micro level and b) describe the development of a quantitative methodology named the Social Innovation Measurement Model Questionnaire (SIMM-Q). We will also discuss some principal issues linked to research on social innovation and its relevance for co-creation.

Purpose:
Interprofessional collaboration is necessary for handling the complex psychosocial needs of prisoners. This collaboration must be addressed to avoid high recidivism rates and the human and societal costs linked to them. Challenges are exacerbated by a linear approach to handling prisoners’ problems, silo working between welfare agencies and professional boundaries between frontline workers. There are few adequate theoretical frameworks and tools to address these challenges in the prison context. The purpose of this study is to explore the perceptions that frontline staff working in Norwegian prison facilities have regarding interprofessional collaboration in providing mental health services for prisoners.
Design/methodology/approach:
This study had a non-experimental, cross-sectional design to explore perceptions of interprofessional collaboration in a prison context. Descriptive and multifactorial analyses (exploratory factor analysis and confirmatory factor analysis) were used to explore the data.
Findings:
The analysis showed that three factors, communication, organizational culture and domain, explained 95% of the variance. Results are discussed using relational coordination, as well as the conceptual PINCOM model, as a theoretical framework.
Originality/value:
Few studies explicitly explore collaboration between professionals in mental health and prison services despite its being a prerequisite to achieving sufficient services for prisoners. To our knowledge, this current study is one of the first in Norway to explore collaboration in a prison context by analysing quantitative data and focusing on frontline workers perception of the phenomenon.

ntroduction: Nordic countries face societal challenges for which social innovation may represent solutions. The aim of this scoping review is to explore the concept of social innovation within the research contexts of higher education, ealthcare, and welfare services.
Method: A scoping review methodology was used, including a literature search and the identification of eligible studies published between 2007 and 2019, in addition to data extraction and synthesis. Forty-three studies were included in this review.
Results: Across the research contexts, social innovation is conceptualized as a set of novel, creative, human-centred, and value-driven processes aiming to bring about change. Qualitative research methods dominate social innovation research. In welfare services, social innovation concerns the relationship between policy and praxis, new forms of leadership and management, and the promotion of societal inclusion and cohesion. Social innovation in healthcare comprises the use of technology to digitalize service, enhance patients’ well-being, and improve service quality. In higher education, social innovation research focuses on educational reforms involving non-profit stakeholders.
Discussion: Social innovation is a multifaceted concept related to change at the organizational or societal level, often with various stakeholders working together to create improvements. The lack of a common definition and framework of social innovation makes this concept difficult to measure or quantify, reflecting the dominance of qualitative research methods in the selected research contexts. Across these research contexts, social innovation can be defined and used for various research purposes, which are often political and value-based, with the latter connected to the common good and people’s well-being. Moreover, few social innovation studies have been performed in Nordic countries.

Novel approaches are needed if the voices of prisoners as service users are to be heard in service development and organisational learning. In this chapter we introduce Q methodology and suggest how this research method can be applied in order to reveal the views of service users in contact with the criminal justice system. We illustrate this by describing the development of a set of Q statements used to elicit the perspectives of ex-prisoners’ experiences of service provisions in an UK mentorship organisation. We discuss how Q methodology can be applied to capture ex-prison service users’ views in research, in therapy or in dialogues between service user and mentor, as well as in including service users’ voices in service development.

This chapter provides a novel framework for risk assessment and management by combining the Perception of Interprofessional Collaboration Model (PINCOM) and Historical-Clinical-Risk Management-20, Version 3 (HCR-20V3). PINCOM was developed to identify central aspects of interprofessional collaboration, whereas HCR-20V3 is the most used instrument in risk assessment of violence worldwide. The main scope of this chapter is to introduce and discuss the feasibility of combining the two tools to enhance collaboration between service providers in the mental health and criminal justice systems. First, we describe the HCR-20V3 and suggest how parts of it can be jointly used as a tool for concrete collaboration in the practice field. Next, we present the PINCOM tool, containing a conceptual model (PINCOM) and a research methodology (PINCOM-Q). It is suggested that the HCR-20V3 serves as a meeting point between different professionals for being concrete in joint casework. PINCOM can then be used within a larger social innovation framework and as a reflective tool during or after this structured professional assessment and acting as a catalyser for constructive collaboration.

User involvement in service development is seen as important to the credibility of these interventions but involving prisoners or ex-prisoners in this process can be problematic because of the vulnerability of this group as well as security issues. Questions arise as whether front line workers can instead reflect the perspectives of their clients accurately during service development events. Further, we query whether an alignment of perspectives is important for effective professional-prisoner relationships and offender self-efficacy when engaging in rehabilitation and reintegration programmes. To explore these questions, this chapter, in a case study third sector mentorship organisation, compares and contrasts the views of ex-prisoners and their mentors. Q methodology is employed to make this comparison. We find that mentors perspectives are most in tune with the most pessimistic perspectives of their clients: the most lonely, indigent and ill group of the exoffenders they work with. They do not share the optimistic views that characterise other groups of offenders in receipt of their service. The chapter explores the implications of these different views for exoffenders, their mentors and the participation of the offender in service innovation.

Scrutinising a proposed framework underpinned by empirical findings to help integrate IPE into curricula.
Full text in Research Archive
Show summary
Despite the increasing evidence for benefits of IPE and requirements of health and social care students to engage in meaningful interprofessional learning (IPL) throughout their education, IPE is not integrated into curricula in all courses. A team from Norway and the United Kingdom (UK) based at three universities came together to investigate teachers’ views of IPL and how their role in students achieving outcomes. Early findings revealed that some teachers are sceptical about the way IPE was offered at their universities and whether their efforts facilitating IPL would be worth it. This prompted further investigation and the need for a framework to support the integration of IPE into curricula.
A mixed method approach was adopted to collect quantitative data from educators more widely; qualitative data from the original group of teachers to delve deeper into initial findings, and qualitative data from senior leaders working at the three universities. Findings from each part of the study underpin a proposed framework that stakeholders can use at their respective institution.
The purpose of this cafe conversation is for those interested in this area to come together and join this social innovation by scrutinising the proposed IPE framework.

Show summary
