LOG713 Models for Production Management (Autumn 2022)

About the course

Different topics concerning production planning will be treated like Little’s law, scheduling problems with different objectives, line balancing and lot sizing. In a more general setting production philosophies like MRP, OPT/TOC, Lean /JIT and agile production are discussed.

The course is connected to the following study programs

Recommended requirements

None, apart from being a master student in logistics accepted into the Logistics Analytics variant.

The student's learning outcomes after completing the course

Knowledge

The student should have knowledge of:

  • Different levels of production planning and control, and which decisions are made at each level
  • Aggregated production planning and Materials Requirement Planning (MRP)
  • The concepts just-in-time, kanban, optimized production technology, and the theory of constraints
  • Lot-sizing problems and sequencing rules for single machine scheduling
  • Little’s Law, throughput, cycle time and line balancing problems for production lines

Skills

The student is able to:

  • Create aggregated production plans based on both chase and level strategies
  • Create MRP records based on verbal descriptions
  • Apply heuristics and the Wagner-Within method to solve lot-sizing problems
  • Apply basic sequencing rules for single machine scheduling
  • Calculate best case, worst case, and practical worst case performance for cycle time and throughput of a given production line
  • Execute a heuristic to solve line balancing problems for production lines

General competence

The student can:

  • Comprehend and apply models and solution methods for production planning problems taken from textbooks and research articles
