This course provides an overview of the role of quality management in the modern company from its roots in factories of 1900’s to its importance in all industry sectors in 2022. The course then examines problem solving using a set of readings, along with a set of in-class exercises. This highlights the ongoing usefulness of some key quality management tools and in particular the importance of communication, critical reasoning and the ability to coordinate with other functions in improving quality outcomes.

Recommended knowledge

Knowledge of basic statistics including a standard deviation. Ability to open and use Excel spreadsheets. Access to a laptop computer with Excel and access to internet.

The student’s learning outcomes after completing the course:

Knowledge: Understanding of basic tools of quality management (e.g., 7 Quality Control Tools)

Skills: Ability to create and analyze processes using process flow diagrams in Excel.

General competence: A general understanding of how continuous improvement programs are managed and the role of the employee versus the role of the manager in these programs. This includes an understanding of the usefulness of the basic quality management tools.

Forms of teaching and learning

The class will work using a Learn-Do active learning format. For example, a class session may start with the class jointly completing an Excel spreadsheet that contains a simple exercise that involves the use of a basic quality control tools. The class will work through this problem with the instructor. Then the class will apply the tool to a) either another problem in a spreadsheet, or b) to improving performance in a simulation (electronic beer game) as part of a team. This creates a set of active learning cycles that consist of guided learn-do activities followed by reflection.

Examination:

  • Form of assessment: Two assessments are: 1) submission of the Excel spreadsheet exercises by Thursday night (10%) and 2) an in class assessment on Friday from 9 to 12, which consists of an exam (o0%).
