TRA500 European Transport Policies (Autumn 2023)

About the course

The European Union, as well as many European countries, are taking steps to meet the rising challenges in the transport sector. For example, the European Commission's low-emission mobility strategy sets guiding principles to Member States to introduce low-emission alternative energies and vehicles, encouraging modal shift to active travel (cycling and walking), public transport and/or shared mobility schemes, such as bike, car-sharing, and car-pooling, to reduce congestion and pollution.

In the course, major policy challenges, goals, and policy instruments on European and national level are discussed, with emphasis on the transition toward a more sustainable transport system and land passenger transport policies in general. The course also introduces how the European Union work as well as some central public policy theories.

The course will emphasize:

  • Land passenger transport
  • Sustainable transport systems/sustainable transition
  • EUs transport policies and other relevant documents
  • EUs central institutions and decision-making processes

The course provides an introduction to the European union institutions and how EU work, which is central for many workplaces, not just those within transport. The course is therefore also relevant for students that are interested in working with EU issues or international organisations in general.

The course does not contain quantitative modelling, mathematics, or statistical data analysis.
