IBE320 Extended Reality (Spring 2023)

About the course

The course looks at several aspects of Milgram's concept of a “Virtuality Continuum” from 1994, identifying human experiences along a spectrum from an all real environment, to degrees of Mixed Reality (MR) that contains elements of Augmented Reality (AR), to the all Virtual Reality (VR) environment.  It will define and provide a history of extended realities (XR). Overview of hardware and software involved in XR. User interface and interaction mechanisms. The physics of light and sound and other phenomena, as well as the physiological and cognitive functions related to vision, hearing and other senses.   The course will also cover how to plan and build an XR experience using software, and how to evaluate it.

The course is connected to the following study programs

  • Individual Study Courses/Part- time studies
  • Bachelor in IT and Digitalization

Recommended requirements

Programming is an advantage

The student's learning outcomes after completing the course

On completion of the course the student will have knowledge of

  • the hardware and software involved in creating the XR experiences,

  • how the human being interacts with the experiences through these,

  • how XR development processes should be managed.

The student will have acquired skills in

  • setting up simple experiences using software,

  • setting up simulations of interacting physical objects such as buildings, technical drawings, business processes, roles, personal identities.

  • setting up and running procedures for testing and evaluation.

The student will have competence to

  • contribute in projects where they consider using or developing XR to solve information processing problems

Forms of teaching and learning

4 hours of teaching per week with lectures, seminars, project work and problem solving with guidance from auxiliary teacher and subject teacher.
