SCM705 Cost Management in SCM (Spring 2023)

About the course

This course introduces students to several traditional and contemporary costing approaches that organizations utilize to increase their visibility of costs and engender decision-making process in supply chains. Typically, a supply chain consists of several actors whose actions are necessary value creation milestones. However, for a supply chain to be reasonably competitive there should be efficient coordination of actions of all participants. Profitability and competitiveness are functions of efficient cost management at the very core. This course introduces students to such aspect as financial control in the supply chain, customer and supplier relationship management, collaborative innovation, and risk management. Students will have a possibility to augment in class concepts with hands-on real-world assignment.

Upon successful completion of this course participants should be able to:

Knowledge

  1. Demonstrate knowledge of critical and analytical approaches within the realm of cost management in supply chain management.

Skills

  1. Presentation skills: prepare and present a paper that engages one or several issues of the course. Miniature research on a relevant real-world case.
  2. Demonstrate understanding of risk management process and strategies.
  3. Engage with practical world to augment theoretical knowledge acquired in class.

General competence

  1. Demonstrate the ability to extract and assimilate cost information in a given situation and make informed decision thereof.
  2. Demonstrate the ability to relate theoretical (in class) concepts to practical information in a coherent manner.
  3. Demonstrate coherence between scholarship and practice through the lens of real-word case study.
  4. Receive and provide constructive critique on the assignment(s).
  5. Demonstrate an understanding of different cost concepts and how these relate to cost containment in supply chain management.
