Table of contents
Contents
The course covers the following routing planning problems in last-mile delivery part of logistics network:
- postman (arc) routing problem and its variants
- traveling salesman problem and its variants
- capacitated vehicle routing problem
- vehicle routing problem with time windows for service
- vehicle routing problem with deliveries and pickups, its types and variants
- periodic vehicle routing problem
- inventory routing problem
For these topics, emphasis will be placed on solving small-size problems by hand with the classical heuristics or using full enumeration of feasible solutions.
The course is connected to the following study programs
Recommended knowledge
The student's learning outcomes after passing the exam
Knowledge
After completing the course, the students will have knowledge of
• Examples and classification of last-mile delivery routing problems in logistics
• Two main types of vehicle routing problems and their applications in on-land and sea transportation
• Routing problems on arcs, their types and applications, and algorithms to solve them
• Classical Travelling Salesperson Problem, its variants, and classical heuristics to find solutions
• Vehicle Routing Problems, its variants, practical solution approaches and classical solution methods
Skills
After completing the course, the students will be able to apply the knowledge achieved (skills)
• to identify based on a verbal description and input data the type and the class the of routing problem at hand
• to solve various routing problems of small size by hand using classical construction heuristics
• to evaluate the quality of solutions constructed with heuristics using lower bounds
• to find optimal solutions of small-size routing problems using full enumeration of all feasible solutions
General competence
After completing the course, the students will be able
• to identify types of routing planning problems arising in last-mile delivery parts of logistics networks, in study and work contexts
• to perceive logical relationships, assumptions, limitations and requirements on solution derived from input data, to specify the class of routing problem at hand
• to use knowledge to select which algorithms are appropriate for solution of different routing planning problems in logistics
• to use skills to solve routing planning problems with heuristics and full enumeration
• to present and visualize solutions of routing problems arising in transportation and last-mile delivery
• to apply in-depth knowledge of solution methods and techniques for routing vehicles serving customers in various logistics settings
