This week moves from foundational theory into the practical execution of research. Building on the philosophical and design frameworks introduced in Week 35, students now work with the specific methods they will use to collect, analyze, and present their findings. The week covers two major methodological traditions, qualitative and quantitative, with dedicated sessions on case study research, design science and clinical management research qualitative data collection and analysis, and survey-based research. Students completing this week will be ready to defend their research proposals and, later, conduct research for their theses.

Course Outline:

  • Day 1: Case Study Research: Design and Application
  • Day 2: Design Science and Clinical Management Research
  • Day 3: Qualitative Data Collection and Analysis: Interviews, Focus Groups, and Observations
  • Day 4: Survey Research: Design, Sampling, Data Collection, and Analysis
  • Day 5: Oral Examination

The course is connected to the following study programs

Recommended knowledge

Students are strongly encouraged to have completed Week 35 (Framing, Scoping, and Choosing Research Designs). This week assumes familiarity with the distinction between qualitative and quantitative approaches and with the structure of a research proposal and a thesis.

The student's learning outcomes after passing the exam

Knowledge:

After completing this week, the students will:

  • Understand the logic and structure of case study and clinical management research and its application in logistics contexts.
  • Know the principles of qualitative data collection, including the design of interviews, focus groups, and observational studies, and how qualitative data is systematically analyzed.
  • Understand the key stages of survey research: questionnaire design, sampling strategies, data collection procedures, and quantitative analysis of survey data.

Skills

Students will be able to:

  • Qualitative research approach for a specific research problem.
  • Plan and conduct qualitative data collection using interviews, focus groups, or observation, and apply appropriate analytical frameworks to the data.
  • Design a survey instrument, select a sampling approach, collect data, and carry out basic quantitative analysis of survey results.

General Competence

Students will:

  • Demonstrate the ability to select and apply research methods that are appropriate to their research questions and epistemological position.
  • Reflect critically on the strengths and limitations of their chosen methods.
  • Communicate research findings clearly and confidently to an academic audience in both written and oral formats.

Forms of teaching and learning

Lectures, hands-on exercises, group discussions, and peer feedback. In-class exercises on days 1-4 are part of the continuous assessment and will be completed during scheduled sessions.

Exam
