About the course

The course provides an introduction to game theory, which is applied to the study of strategic interaction among firms operating in imperfectly competitive markets.

Topics:

  • Basic non-cooperative game theory
  • Tactical decisions concerning what and how much to supply, what price to charge, including tacit collusion
  • Strategic decisions in order to avoid or limit competition
  • Advertising and R&D

The student's learning outcomes after completing the course

The successful candidate will have:

  • understanding of strategic interaction in the real markets like petroleum, energy, and maritime transportation.
  • knowledge how to apply game theory to structure and analyse complex market interactions.
  • analytical tools to work through case studies of the real Norwegian industrial companies using the market models from the course.
