IDR302 Leadership and Management in Performance Cultures (Autumn 2020)

About the course

Effective leadership is essential in any sports organisation, both on and off the pitch. This course examines the nature of leadership, its role in sport, styles of leadership, the role and task of a leader and further contemporary issues to give students the most complete and clear picture of contemporary leadership in sport.  The course draws upon underpinning core leadership theories and employs a number of case studies throughout to show how best practice can be applied in real world settings. 

The course covers various leadership issues including:

  • HRM
  • strategic leadership
  • leading effective change
  • the role of leadership in changing organizational culture
  • motivation and performance.

After the completion of the course, the students should:

Knowledge:

  • know leadership theories applicable to the sport environment, sport management, sport coaching and team leadership

Skills:

  • identify patterns that characterize performance organzations
  • know how to work as a team, delegate responsibilities, evaluate team members and handle to be evaluated as a team member
  • communicate through oral, written and poster presentations

General knowledge:

  • be aware of how cultural, inter-personal and personal factors may influence organisational output

Four seminars during the semester consisting of lectures, group work, group assignments, and group presentations.

Course evaluation

The course consist of 4 seminars

Each seminar consist of:

  • 2 lectures (09.00 – 12.00)
  • 2-3 group work sessions with supervision
  • 1 group assignment in the end of each seminar

Assignments – Group work (4)

  • Seminar 1-3, each assignments counts for 20% of final grade (3 * 20% = 60%)
  • Seminar 4, has one assignment and counts for 40% of final grade
