IDR705 Sport History (Autumn 2020)

About the course

The course is designed to give students an introduction to studying sport in society. Through the course, students will learn that sport have never been "just a game".

More specifically, the following topis will be addressed:

  • The development of international sport organizations and the Olympic movement
  • Historical perspectives on:
    • Sport and gender
    • Sport and race
    • Sport and social class
    • Sport and politics
    • Sport and identity
    • Sport and media

Knowledge

Completing this course the students should be able to:

  • understand different theories discussing the development of modern sports and its organizations
  • understand and explain how sport has been shaped and moulded by major political and economic events of the past three centuries
  • know how to apply historical explanations to issues such as gender, race, social class, identity and media in a sport context.

Skills

Completing this course the students should be able to:

  • apply historical theories to discuss the development of different sports and their organsiations
  • apply a literature study of international research publications of to analyse and discuss a specific sport historical phenomenon
  • present a historical analysis (both orally and in writing), in an theoretically informed manner.

General qualifications

Completing this course the students should be able to:

  • work independently and in groups in analysing a historical problem
  • discuss historical phenomena orally in a group session
  • recognize the qualities and the relevance of historical knowledge as part of understanding comtemporary sport
  • critically reflect on the role of sport and its organisations in contemporary society

Forms of teaching and learning

Lectures will be organized as 4 seminars, with 10-12 hours lectures pr. seminar. Combination of regular lectures, individual work, group work, group assignments and presentations, which requires the students to actively contribute to own learning.

Some lectures will be mandatory.
