IDR807 Seminars in Sport Leadership and Innovation (Spring 2021)

About the course

Like many other fields in society, the sport field is simultaneously both conservative and changing. Therefore this course intend to take students to a deeper level of understanding of change issues applied to sport.

Through three separate seminars the course is addressing the issue of agency in society and organizations, frequently framed as leadership, entrepreneurship, innovation management, knowledge management etc. Seminar topics will be based on academic disciplines such as psychology, organization sociology and evolutionary economics. Topics might include:

  • Innovation and innovation management
  • Entrepreneurship; institutional entrepreneurship, social entrepreneurship, etc.
  • Start-ups in the sports industry
  • Performance management and change
  • Leadership in and of sport clubs and federations

The course plan and lecturers of the seminars will be available in due course before the semester.

Completing this course the student should be able to:

  • Explain specific themes and problem areas of organizational change in the sport field.
  • Explain how scientific knowledge about change and leadership can be applied in sport institutions.
  • Critically evaluate the important issues facing potential sport entrepreneurs in the process of starting up and running a new business venture.


Completing this course the student should be able to:

  • Apply insights from the seminars to critically consider alternative ways to manage sport institutions. 
  • Identify the key tasks and procedures required to start-up business venture in the sport sector.

General competencies

Completing this course the student should be able to:

  • Evaluate and discuss how insights from contemporary issues in sport management can be applied to develop modern sport institutions.

Forms of teaching and learning

3 seminars (2,5 ECTS each) given by experts (which may be invited guest lecturers). The lenght of each seminar is one week, consisting of lectures and group work (15 student contact hours) plus individual work.
