BØK950 Master's Degree Thesis (Spring 2023)

About the course

Before students start working on their master's thesis, the thesis proposal must be approved by the supervisor. The proposal should contain a description of the area, the problem, the literature, and the methods the student plan to use. The proposal should be a written report and should be presented orally. The proporsal will be developed during the third semester. The purpose of the proposal is to kick start the work on the master thesis. The purpose of the course SØK705 Research Methods and Porposal in the third semester is to facilitate the transition from reading course materials and taking exams to writing a thesis.

The master's thesis is 30 ECTS (one semester) and must be a research question related to the main profile of the program, economic analysis. Preferably a theoretical or an empirical problem, but more practical problems may be approved for the less abitious student. The master's thesis gives the student the opportunity to apply the theories and the methods presented during the course sequence. Students also has the opportunity to deepen their knowledge of a particular research area. The thesis is scientific work and should therefore follow standard scientific procedure (references, etc.). The thesis should document that the student is able to apply the theories and the methods learned during the course sequence. The master's thesis should in principle be an individual effort, but teams of up to two students may write the thesis together. The master's thesis represents the end product of the study, and should normally be completed in the fourth semester.

There will normally be two oral presentations of the progress during the semester (early February and late April). The purpose of the presentations is to give the student experience in presenting reports and to make sure that the progress follows the plan. The presentations also works as a forum in which students may learn from each other. Attendance at the presentations is mandatory. Please confirm dates with the person in charge before booking any trips etc. in February or April.
