Abstract

This study explores the implementation of good governance principles within national sport federations in Europe (NSFs), focusing on transparency, democratic processes, accountability, and social responsibility. Guided by goal-setting theory, the research gathered 268 responses from board members and paid staff in 26 European countries. Findings indicate that transparency, accountability, and democratic processes are perceived as important with low implementation difficulty, while social responsibility is considered the most crucial principle. Notably, paid staff find implementation less challenging than board members, and principles perceived as more important are easier to implement. The study highlights the importance of adopting a comprehensive perspective on good governance, proposing that the principles examined, along with operational indicators, form a practical set of governance proxies for NSFs. Consequently, an actionable model for implementing good governance is suggested, outlining five connected areas, each encompassing 3 to 5 governance practices.
