LOG725 Transportation and Distribution (Autumn 2021)

About the course

The course focuses on logistic problems appearing in transportation and distribution planning. Emphasis is the following areas:

• Transportation problems in different variants

• Localization problems in different variants

• Network problems

• Network design problems

• Assignment problems

To deal with the different transportation and distribution problems, the course introduces mathematical programming to formulate the planning problems, and the use of standard software for solving the resulting formulations.

The content may be subjected to adjustments. Any adjustments will be ready before the course starts.

A quantitative background is recommended.

The student's learning outcomes after completing the course

After having completed the course, the students should be able to:

• Define the transportation problem, as well as a selection of localization problems, network problems, network design problems, and assignment problems.

• Give precise formulations of the aforementioned transportation and distribution planning problems

• Enter the formulations of the problems as input to standard software for solving mathematical programming problems, and use this software to obtain solutions

• Formulate extensions of transportation problems and localization problems, based on verbal descriptions

• Identify, formulate, and solve the aforementioned optimization problems based on verbal descriptions and numerical data for key parameters

• Discuss the advantages and disadvantages of using standard software for solving practical transportation and distribution planning problems

Forms of teaching and learning

3 hours of lectures per week.

Computer lab work and other activities may be added.

Home exam consisting of several mandatory assignments, contributes 40% to the final grade.

The final oral examination will account for 60 % of the grade.
