About the course
The course covers concepts of the following areas:
- Air transport law, policy and regulations
- Air transport supply and demand
- Aircraft acquisition and financing
- Air traffic management
- The economics of airlines (business models, costs and pricing, networks, etc.)
- The economics of airports (layout and capacity, business model, marketing etc.)
- Environmental aspects of air transport management
A case-based home exam (40%) will support the learning outcome.

Recommended requirements
Equivalent to requirements for the MSc program in Logistics.
The student's learning outcomes after completing the course
This module provides an analysis of the key economic issues facing the air transport industry. The course puts special emphasis on the understanding of the air transport sector as an integrated system. After completing this module, the student should have obtained the following:
Knowledge
- knowledge about the history of aviation
- advanced knowledge about air transport demand and supply
- knowledge of air transport regulations and their effects
- advanced knowledge about how airfares and aircraft capacity is determined
- knowledge about route planning within aviation
- knowledge about air transport and effects on society and environment
Skills
- be able to work with assessment of the viability of changes in air transport routes, airports, aircraft types
- be able to asess how these changes affects the airlines financially
- be able to investigate how changes in the air transport network could affect economic performance
Competence
- understand the nature of air transport and how issues can be addressed
- be able to work in professial teams
- be able to communicate with professionals and other stakeholders on air transoport issues,
Forms of teaching and learning
3 hours of lectures per week; besides, successful students will plan time for supplementary activities such as preparations/follow-ups, readings, homework, assignment, and final exam preps.
