TRA830 Urban Public Transport (Vår 2021)

Om emnet

The transport system is a large contributor the total emissions of greenhouse gases. To reduce this negative impact, the reliance on private car has to be reduced. Efficient public transport systems could be a major force in achieving such a development. In addition, public transport provides access to the labour market and social activities for people without access to car. Therefore, public transport has the potential to contribute to social- and democratic inclusion of people that would otherwise be left out of such activities.

In this course we study the role of public transport in society and its potential to contribute to a future sustainable transport system.

The course aims at giving a thorough introduction to models that can be used in the analysis of demand for and supply of public transport as well as providing tools for planning an efficient public transport system. The course will give an understanding of the costs of providing public transport and how that affects the market situation. The course will also provide knowledge of the principles of optimal prizing and supply determination of public transport services under different conditions including pricing of externalities. Furthermore, the course will address how Cost-Benefit Analysis can be used to improve the public transport system.

After the course, the student will:

•  have knowledge and understanding of the analytical tools used to analyse and evaluate public transport systems.
• be able to use the analytical tools in the analysis of specific empirical public transport systems.
• be able to use the analytical tools when planning public transport systems.
• be able to understand the how the government can affect the public transport market through different policy instruments.
• be able to understand how the public transport system affect rest of society.
