Suggesting a holistic framework for understanding healthcare
services leadership competence : a critical interpretive synthesis.
Leadership in Health Services.

Purpose:
Healthcare providers are under pressure due to increasing and more complex demands for services. Increased pressure on budgets and human resources adds to an ever-growing problem set. Competent leaders are in demand to ensure effective and well-performing healthcare organisations that deliver balanced results and high-quality services. Researchers have made significant efforts to identify and define determining competencies for healthcare leadership. Broad terms such as competence are, however, inherently at risk of becoming too generic to add analytical value. The purpose of this study is to suggest a holistic framework for understanding healthcare leadership competence, that can be crucial for operationalising important healthcare leadership competencies for researchers, decision-makers as well as practitioners.
Design/methodology/approach:
In the present study, a critical interpretive synthesis (CIS) was conducted to analyse competency descriptions for healthcare leaders. The descriptions were retrieved from peer reviewed empirical studies published between 2010 and 2022 that aimed to identify healthcare services leadership competencies. Grounded theory was utilised to code the data and inductively develop new categories of healthcare leadership competencies. The categorisation was then analysed to suggest a holistic framework for healthcare leadership competence.
Findings:
Forty-one papers were included in the review. Coding and analysing the competence descriptions resulted in 12 healthcare leadership competence categories: (1) character, (2) interpersonal relations, (3) leadership, (4) professionalism, (5) soft HRM, (6) management, (7) organisational knowledge, (8) technology, (9) knowledge of the healthcare environment, (10) change and innovation, (11) knowledge transformation and (12) boundary spanning. Based on this result, a holistic framework for understanding and analysing healthcare services leadership competencies was suggested. This framework suggests that the 12 categories of healthcare leadership competencies include a range of knowledge, skills and abilities that can be understood across the dimension personal – and technical, and organisational internal and – external competencies.
Research limitations/implications:
This literature review was conducted with the results of searching only two electronic databases. Because of this, there is a chance that there exist empirical studies that could have added to the development of the competence categories or could have contradicted some of the descriptions used in this analysis that were assessed as quite harmonised. A CIS also opens for a broader search, including the grey literature, books, policy documents and so on, but this study was limited to peer-reviewed empirical studies. This limitation could also have affected the result, as complex phenomenon such as competence might have been disclosed in greater details in, for example, books.

On the cost of wearing white shorts in women's sport.

The menstrual cycle and associated issues are still considered taboo in many societies, causing a lack of understanding and sub-optimal decision making. Sport can effectively promote awareness of social issues in general, including those concerning the menstrual cycle. One such issue is the anxiety arising from wearing white shorts. Despite increased awareness, still over half the teams participating in the recent 2023 FIFA Women's World Cup played in white shorts. In this study, I investigated women's and men's football games from the World Cups and the European Championships between 2002 and 2023. Using regression analysis, and after controlling for teams’ abilities and other factors, I found that women's teams wearing white shorts achieved between 0.32 and 0.37 fewer points per game. No such effect was observed among men. This result illustrates that a lack of understanding of period anxiety has an immediate cost that is very easy to avoid by simply not playing in white shorts. Most importantly, given that sport is an important vehicle of gender equality, increased awareness of period anxiety could result in higher participation of women in sports and, ultimately, in narrowing other gender gaps.

Bakgrunn:

This chapter will explore the business development of Formula One and the actors involved. The analysis takes a research approach by contextualizing entrepreneurial action within the historically specific moment. The attention to the history of Formula One allows us to emphasize how and why some commercial and organizational patterns developed at certain points of time, and why they changed. This sheds light on the business ratios between, and thus the relative bargaining power of: the commercial owners of the Formula One race series; the sport’s governing body (FIA); and the participating teams/manufacturers, regarding their relative roles and the benefits of the separation of responsibilities in the spectacle, that helps to make Formula One successful.

Purpose:
As part of a national plan to govern professional and organizational development in Norwegian specialist healthcare, the country’s hospital clinics are tasked with constructing development plans. Using the development plan as a case, the paper analyzes how managers navigate and legitimize the planning process among central actors and deals with the contingency of decisions in such strategy work.
Design/methodology/approach:
This study applies a qualitative research design using a case study method. The material consists of public documents, observations and single interviews, covering the process of constructing a development plan at the clinical level.
Findings:
The findings suggest that the development plan was shaped through a multilevel translation process consisting of different contending rationalities. At the clinical level, the management had difficulties in legitimizing the process. The underlying tension between top-down and bottom-up steering challenged involvement and made it difficult to manage the contingency of decisions.
Practical implications:
The findings are relevant to public sector managers working on strategy documents and policymakers identifying challenges that might hinder the fulfillment of political intentions.
Originality/value:
This paper draws on a case from Norway; however, the findings are of general interest. The study contributes to the academic discussion on how to consider both the health authorities’ perspective and the organizational perspective to understand the manager’s role in handling the contingency of decisions and managing paradoxes in the decision-making process.

Across the globe, concerns escalate about the effects of greenhouse gas emissions on global climate conditions, implications on global trade from pandemics, and the destruction of ecosystems from the exploitation of limited and non-replaceable global resources. Politicians and businesses alike agree that something must be done, the question is what, how, when, and by whom? What should firms do to reduce their carbon footprint while continuing to secure jobs and profits? When should firms make decisions to transform their businesses given the uncertainty of markets as well as the lack of clear guidance from global institutions? In this volume we ask: Are we actually walking the talk?
This volume includes select contributions from the 2022 EIBA conference in Oslo, as well as a number of invited contributions. The book is a tribute to Professor Alain Verbeke who has contributed substantially to the theme of ‘walking the talk’ in the IB community. The chapters in this volume illustrate a broad spectre of research questions and ways to answer them within the IB community that provide evidence that many types of actors are taking – or can take - steps to actually “walk the talk”. The contributions also show, however, that MNEs face considerable challenges to make their ambitions real, which in turn presents a challenge for IB scholarship to develop relevant and robust analytical approaches to cover the transition problems that MNEs face.

This article argues by casual empirics that a low draw percent in chess may work as a simplified cheating indicator. Data from a large number of historical chess games (53331) indicate that this extremely simple heuristic may be used as a first test if suspicion of cheating arises for professional chess players. This heuristic does not prove any cheating, but it may be applied as a quick primal indicator of potential cheating behaviour for a player suspected of cheating.

Purpose. Digital transformation in the global sport industry has resulted in digitally focused business strategies, innovative business models, targeted social media marketing strategies, increased consumer, and sponsor demand, accelerated growth in women’s sports, and streaming media (OTT) worldwide. This paper aims to study the case of the U.S.-based National Basketball Association’s (NBA) digital transformation, including multiple interactions of actors in the digital transformation process. A key aim is understanding the synergies resulting from the league’s integration of digital technologies, its business strategy, the evolution of its hybrid business model and the increase in revenue and global branding.
Design/methodology/approach. An explanatory case study design was selected to examine the NBA’s integration of digital technologies, digital and social media marketing strategies, business model innovation, multimedia partnerships, and strategic sponsorships. Data was derived from: (1) academic journals; (2) research based white papers; (3) sport industry reports and periodicals; (4) selected sport industry websites; and (5) recorded interviews with selected NBA officials. Gleaned content was analysed with a theory-oriented triangulation approach. The study period was from 2000 to 2023.
Findings. The NBA’s digital transformation, led by an entrepreneurial management team contributed to a successful business strategy aimed at engaging with digitally focused consumers across multiple media channels. The NBA developed an ecosystem-based consumer-focused hybrid business model, content-focused digital assets, and partnerships with media, brands, and cultural events. Its media partnerships and strategic sponsorships are synergistic with its business and marketing objectives, digital initiatives, and acquisitions. By the 2017-2018 season, the NBA had validated its position as a successful global entertainment property.
Originality/value. This paper examined the NBA’s digital transformation, including how the league integrated digital technologies with its business strategy and model to increase revenue and create a global brand. The analysis examined how the NBA’s digital transformation facilitated the league’s business strategy, enhanced the NBA fan experience, generated revenue from innovative digital products and services, and transformed its business model. The NBA’s business strategy and hybrid business model provide an exemplar for professional teams, leagues, and federations worldwide seeking to digitally transform their enterprises.

In alpine skiing competitions, one of the coaches of the participating countries sets the course. This may provide an advantage, but it may also exert higher pressure on the racers. We analyze 45,467 men’s and 41,221 women’s performances from all competitions in alpine skiing’s Slalom, Giant Slalom, and Super Giant disciplines that took place in the World Cups, World Championships, and Olympic Games between the 2001/2002 and 2019/2020 seasons. We compare the performance of racers when competing on a course that was set by their compatriot to the performance of the same racers in the same season when the course was set by a coach from another country. Having a compatriot course setter only has an effect in the second (and decisive) run of the most technical discipline Slalom. We find that men fail significantly more often to complete their run when their compatriots set the course, whereas women fail significantly less in the same situation. The most likely drivers of our results relate to gender differences in response to expectations and choking under pressure in skill-based tasks.

"Det handler jo om hvordan en spør" : en kvalitativ metasyntese om fysioterapeuters tverrsektorielle samhandling.
Fysioterapeuten.
ISSN 0016-3384.
Fulltekst i vitenarkiv

Nøkkelord: Samhandling, relasjonskompetanse, kommunikasjon, tverrsektoriell samhandling, metasyntese.

This book takes stock of the position of motorsport in the 21st century and considers how it will continue to influence sport business, politics, and society in the future.
Presenting a set of thematic essays and multi-disciplinary case studies, the book demonstrates that motorsport continues to play a significant role in relationships between the automotive industry, nationalism, industrialisation, and capitalism as well as motorsports’ position as a feature of contemporary popular culture. Examining issues such as event management and legacy, environmental sustainability and ‘greenwashing’, diversity and inclusion, the rise of gaming and esports, and the use of sport as political soft power around the world across multiple motorsport disciplines, the book shines fascinating new light on this innovative but sometimes problematic industry.
This is essential reading for all advanced students, researchers, managers, strategists, sponsors, and other stakeholders working at the nexus of motorsport, business, politics, and culture.

Digital tools, such as video conference technology, are currently transforming people’s behaviour, social relations, and learning processes in higher education. But the digital tools used in teaching and learning are also part of a dynamic capitalism. This article focuses on democracy and subjectivity in higher education and outlines a critical approach in this context. I revisit John Dewey’s philosophy to reflect on digital tools and the goals of education in a democratic society. Published more than a century ago, Dewey’s seminal book Democracy and Education is relevant as a constructive approach to combining learning, experience, habits, and tools. Dewey argued that dualisms between mind and matter, knowledge and nature, undermine a democratic society. For Dewey, a society would require communication and the sharing of experiences whilst education would require democratic aims beyond the individual. Yet the contemporary challenges include a ‘digital gaze’ where the technology makes subjects more visible and observed. Foucault’s analytics of power thus becomes a constructive supplement to Dewey’s focus on participation and modes of inquiry to fully examine subjectivity and democracy in postdigital higher education.

In recent years, increased attention has been paid to sustainability in manufacturing. The sustainability concept is fuzzy, however, which, according to previous studies, may hamper the changes needed to address the urgent challenges of global warming and reduced biodiversity. In this study, we aimed at investigating how companies in the maritime industry in North West Norway interpret and operationalize the sustainability concept. The study suggests that companies’ understandings and operationalizations of sustainability are linked to formal regulations, customer demand, and voluntary initiatives intended to gain legitimacy from stakeholders. Companies’ efforts to disclose information on sustainability performance have increased and supply chain sustainability initiatives are attracting attention, while the cluster organization developing a common vision of becoming a zero-emission industry. Among approaches to addressing sustainability issues, the focus on technology is dominant, which can be related to the industry-specific context. Other initiatives are largely in line with economic considerations. This study argues that more comprehensive changes are needed to address the two other dimensions of sustainability, to accelerate the transition towards sustainable manufacturing operations.

Abstract
Additive Manufacturing (AM) allows for on-demand production of items. From a logistics perspective, AM of spare parts may represent a safeguard against manufacturing down-time caused by inventory stockouts or delayed deliveries from suppliers. AM of spare parts may lead to reduced inventories and reduced supply chain emissions. This study explores the implementation of AM of spare parts in a manufacturing company within the metal industry. Based on experience using AM on non-critical parts in-house, the respondents in the study emphasize several advantages by using AM for this purpose. The five key findings for when AM are advantageous were when: 1) certain parts are unavailable, 2) some parts can-not be bought separately from their assembly, 3) the costs of spare parts are high, 4) lead times are long, and 5) costs of parts produced by AM are lower than purchased parts. The evolution of AM technology, the AM cost and required competence for utilizing AM technology will be decisive for the configuration of AM supply chains in the future.

Despite the widely advocated positive impact of coopetition on firms' sustainability performance, there is a lack of research-based explanations for the underlying mechanism linking these two variables. This study investigates the role of dynamic capabilities and sustainability awareness as mediators and necessary conditions for the relationship between coopetition and firms' sustainability performance. Drawing on data from the Norwegian fishing industry, our analysis demonstrates a significant association between coopetition and an increase in dynamic capabilities and sustainability awareness. Additionally, dynamic capabilities and sustainability awareness are significantly related to improved firms' sustainability performance. Importantly, the direct effect of coopetition becomes insignificant when considering the two mediating variables, indicating full mediation by dynamic capabilities and sustainability awareness. Further analysis reveals that these two factors are also necessary conditions for enhancing firms' sustainability performance. Based on these findings, we provide actionable recommendations to guide appropriate managerial and policy interventions.

Based on the agency theory and the social exchange theory, this study investigates how foreign affiliate (FA) managers can utilise two mechanisms that the principal adopts to deal with the agency problem of influencing the foreign divestment/non-divestment decision of the headquarters (HQ). Specifically, we examine whether and under which conditions FA managers’ self-interest affects the decision of the HQ to divest a foreign market. Using secondary and primary data collected from multiple informants in Chinese firms engaged in outward foreign direct investment (OFDI), we find that although the FA managers’ self-interest has no direct impact on the HQ’s foreign divestment decision, the HQ is less likely to divest the foreign market when the FA manager holds a high level of trust in the HQ. Furthermore, when the FA is locally embedded in the foreign host market, the manager’s self-interest has the strongest negative impact on the HQ’s foreign divestment decision.

In this paper, I examine the neoliberal transformation of civil society through Mitchel Foucault’s
insights concerning knowledge, power, and governmentality. The objective of this paper is to
trace the evolving understandings of civil society and how they relate to governmental rationalities
and technologies of power. The traditional notion of civil society as a distinct and autonomous
sphere has shifted toward an intermediary associations approach under neoliberalism. I posit
that the mobilization of non-governmental organizations and civil society organizations by states,
international organizations, and donor agencies since the 1990s constitutes a form of governmental
technology, influenced by neoliberal rationalities. This technology serves the neoliberal agenda of
undermining the social state, promoting market creation, and encouraging non-partisanship. This
argument suggests that the rise of civil society as intermediary associations coincides with the
decline of society.

Our knowledge about the role of legal institutions in the developing world is limited. The present paper fills this gap in the literature by estimating, in a production function framework, how legal origins interact with ethnic heterogeneity in determining GDP-per-capita in 35 Sub-Saharan African (SSA) countries over the period 1970–2013. The countries in our sample follow either the Common (British) law or the Civil (French) law system and exhibit a wide range of ethnic heterogeneity. Our findings show that in the context of low ethnic heterogeneity, Common law is associated with better economic outcomes. Nonetheless, in the presence of high ethnic heterogeneity, countries under Civil law experience higher levels of political stability and coordination resulting in a higher level of GDP-per-capita. In SSA countries, stability and coordination are also essential factors in the efficient use of natural resources, which are abundant in Africa, and can substantially contribute to prosperity.

SMEs' diversification of financing sources : strategy or desperation?
International Journal of Finance and Economics.

doi:

Vis sammendrag
The paper's objective is to provide a large sample evidence on small and medium enterprises' (SMEs) financing source diversification patterns. We use the large World Bank Enterprise Survey (WBES) sample of SMEs from 135 developing and emerging economies. We find that the extent of financing source diversification is significantly affected by firm-specific and country-specific characteristics. Commonly, (unconstrained) SMEs specialise their financing in retained earnings. However, SMEs experiencing financial constraints often rely on diversified financing sources. We provide theoretical justification and empirical evidence of a quadratic relationship between financial constraints and financing source diversification: SMEs experiencing a moderate degree of financial constraints use the most diversified sources of financing. This finding, combined with the evidence that financially unconstrained SMEs use fewer financing sources, suggests that diversification of financing sources by SMEs is a strategic choice based on the optimal complementarity of financing sources achieved through the credit multiplier channel.

This article studies tears of joy by exploring data on the behavior of gold medalists of all 450 individual events at the 2012 and 2016 Summer Olympic Games at the end of the medalists’ respective competitions and during the medal ceremonies. We find that women cry more than men, older athletes cry more than younger athletes, athletes from the host country cry more at the end of the competition, and athletes cry more when they receive information on their victory immediately after completing their task. When looking at the socioeconomic characteristics of athletes’ countries, we find that men from countries with larger female labor force participation rates cry more than men from countries with lower female labor force participation, and athletes from countries with higher religious fractionalization cry less than those from countries with lower fractionalization. Finally, we find no relationship between the wealth of a country and the propensity of its athletes of any gender to cry. We discuss possible mechanisms that drive our results and suggest future directions for observational studies on emotions. (PsycInfo Database Record (c) 2023 APA, all rights reserved)

This study analyses how recruiting messages showing commitment to sustainability influence job seekers' perceptions of organisational attractiveness. To address a call from prior research, we propose that organisational prestige mediates the positive relationship between commitment to sustainability and attractiveness. As job seekers from different cultures can have different responses to companies' information, the moderating role of the masculinity dimension of national culture is also examined. In a study of 412 job seekers from four different countries, experimental manipulation was used to assess perceptions of different recruiting messages containing information on business sustainability. Results support the proposed relationships. Theoretical and practical contributions include the integration of signalling and social identity theories to considering a wide variety of mechanisms which show how individuals are attracted to organisations and useful information for helping managers to recruit young talent. Using a sample of young part-time job seekers is a limitation of this work.

This study examines the effect of dynamic capabilities (DCs) on economic performance (ECOP), social performance (SOP), and environmental performance (ENVP) under different levels of environmental dynamism (EnvD). Based on preliminary interviews and survey data collected from Norwegian fishing firms, the analysis was conducted using partial least squares structural equation modeling and necessary conditions analysis. The results show that firms that acquire a set of DCs are more likely to improve their economic, social, and environmental sustainability performance. More so, firms' economic performance is a necessary condition for social performance, but not for ENVP. Interestingly, the results show that the effect of DCs on economic and environmental sustainability performance is even stronger when the level of EnvD is higher. However, EnvD does not have a significant effect on the relationship between DCs and social sustainability performance. Our findings provide guidance to managers on how and when to invest in and leverage DCs to improve sustainability performance in the food industry.

Landslides are commonly occurring global geological hazards, with negative and far-reaching consequences for human life, and the economic and natural environment. This study analyzes the risk, vulnerability, and resilience of several landslide-prone areas in eight countries based on community perception and attitude related to landslide events through an online survey questionnaire that includes four sections: (1) natural disaster and landslide susceptibility, (2) knowledge and awareness of the causes of landslides, (3) psychological effects of landslide events, and (4) sociodemographic and socioeconomic characteristics. To gain an in-depth understanding of the landslide risk and sustainability, three state-of-the-art machine learning (ML) approaches, Decision Tree (DT), Xtreme Gradient Boosting (XGB), and Random Forest (RF), and a statistical approach, Logistic Regression (LR), were used to investigate and compare the performance of the ML models. The results suggested that indirect losses caused by landslides significantly affect the communities across the globe both psychologically and economically. Furthermore, heavy rain is the most relevant event that was perceived by the communities to trigger a potential landslide, while major civil infrastructure systems, including building and road damages, were found as the main threats to the community due to landslides. The most significant factors related to landslide risk based on the Gini coefficient were found to be land classification, environmental factors, and building material. In addition, based on LR, land classification, landslide health impact, environmental factors, and emergency response were significantly related to landslide risk perception. In summary, the XGB model is feasible in the assessment of landslide susceptibility; the prediction performance is also robust and produced better prediction capacities compared to other ML models. This research can considerably assist stakeholders in making better decisions toward effective landslide hazard management. Future research should focus on expanding this study to other critical landslide-prone communities by involving more diverse population.

This article investigates training in sports and argues (and demonstrates) that training (game-theoretically) works exactly as doping do. That is, the Nash equilibrium is, under reasonable assumptions, a Prisoner’s Dilemma outcome. Furthermore, several other performance improving categories within sport are examined, and proven to behave similarly. Finally, a link to general competitive economic activity is examined and proven NOT (necessarily) to have similar characteristics. The article also discusses (initially) the Prisoner’s Dilemma game and its lack of a sensible definition. Such a definition is proposed, although this proposition is not considered the main finding in the paper.

We utilize data from 5,010 soccer games in the top two Swiss divisions between the 2005/06 and 2018/19 seasons. In these games, a referee can share the same linguistic area with one of the teams. Using referee-per-season fixed effects, we find that referees issue significantly more penalties, in the form of yellow cards, to teams that are not from the referee's linguistic area. We also find some evidence, in the highest level league only, that referees issue more red cards to teams that are not from their linguistic area and that away teams achieve fewer points when home teams share the same linguistic area with the referee. Our analyses suggest that referees' bias is likely to be subconscious and reflexive rather than being a deliberate act of discrimination.

Product development capabilities-based export channel selection and export performance.

Purpose:
Drawing on the resource-based view and institutional theory, this study explores how firms select export channels to realise the value of their product development capabilities (PDC) and improve export performance by aligning PDC, entrepreneurial orientation (EO), cultural-cognitive institutional distance (CCID) and channel selection.
Design/methodology/approach:
This study adopted a quantitative design and used data collected from multiple respondents in 294 Chinese exporting ventures. Hypotheses were tested using logistic regression analysis and multiple regression analysis.
Findings:
The results of the study suggest that PDC plays a vital role in export channel decisions. The results also show that there is a three-way interaction between PDC, EO and CCID regarding export channel selection. More importantly, this study suggests that firms using export channels that align with PDC, contingent on EO and CCID, generate superior export performance.
Originality/value:
This study extends the export channel literature by looking at the different roles of important organisational capabilities (i.e. PDC and EO) on export channel selection. Further, it shows that firms need to align the exploitation of their PDC with the export channel selection, along with EO capabilities, and CCID to achieve better performance in the export market.

How to select participants for a sports tournament when they are divided into different sets, and one should find a fair number of slots for each set? We propose to address this question by resorting to standard tools from the fair allocation literature. To frame our discussion, we focus on the increase in the number of participating teams in the FIFA World Cup. We explore the allocation of additional slots among continental confederations. We consider 10 different allocations. Based on our analysis, we can argue that the European soccer confederation (UEFA) has a solid basis to claim for additional slots.

Research question:
In light of the widening financial and sporting gaps across nations, leagues, and clubs in European football, we ask what measures smaller nations take to keep track with the competition. In focusing on the case of Norway, we look at the major steps taken to increase the competitiveness of men’s football; explore the narratives that motivate these steps; and discuss conflicts and consequences arising across the initiatives and their effects on the larger ecosystem of football.
Research methods:
The study relies on open sources: documents from the football organizations; interviews by football’s spokespersons to media outlets; and opinion expressed in media by pundits and commentators.
Results and findings:
Concomitant with steepening the competition pyramid the football association and the premier league have targeted talent development through programmes that professionalize the social world of young players while increasingly putting social values and recruitment under pressure.
Research contribution:
The study is one of few that directs attention towards the ecosystem of European football beyond the developments at its apex.
Practical implication:
Football and public authorities should ask how far and how one should pursue talent for professional football before the system gets out of control.

This book examines how states in the post-socialist Western Balkans region have used sport as a policy tool, and how sport in the region has been shaped by politics, history, and culture.
Looking closely at the intersection of sports policy and politics in the countries of Serbia, Montenegro, Croatia, and Bosnia and Herzegovina, this book explores the roles of sport in nation-building and how sport has been used by regimes looking to establish political legitimacy in the transition from the post-socialist era. It offers a fascinating insight into the way that sport has been co-opted for political purposes, and into the complexities of formulating sports policy and wider public policy in societies in which governance structures may be weak and in which clientelism, corruption, and partisanship pose constant challenges.
This book is fascinating reading for anybody with an interest in the history and politics of sport, in public policy, or in the history, politics, and culture of the former Yugoslav countries.

Format and schedule proposals for a FIFA World Cup with 12 four-team groups.
Norges Handelshøyskole. Institutt for foretaksøkonomi.
ISSN 1500-4066.
Vis sammendrag
After the expansion of the FIFA World Cup from 32 to 48 teams starting from the 2026 edition, the initial proposal was to split the 48 national teams into 16 groups of three. Among other drawbacks, this proposal provides potential for collusion. Recently, after widespread criticism, FIFA officials signaled the possibility to re-discuss that proposal, pointing to a tournament with 12 groups of four teams. If this new proposal prevails, relevant questions arise about tournament design and schedule. In this paper, we propose tournament formats for a World Cup with 12 groups of four teams, considering a number of criteria, such as non-collusion, symmetry in rest days, no dead rubbers, and a tournament length of about one month. At the same time, our proposals attempt to adhere to the traditional format, with some nuances either in the group stage or in the knockout stage.
