Information on the programme

Today, all companies have to pay attention to what kind of energy source they use. This will be increasingly important in the future, as policy and regulations are likely to become stricter. The combined knowledge of energy markets and energy sources, as well as efficient logistics solutions, makes this program unique.

The programme aims to give a thorough analysis and understanding of problems, challenges and solutions associated with all parts of the supply chains dealing with energy both on organization level and within the supply chain.

Along with presenting a broad range of logistics topics, the program gives an understanding of the energy situation in the world, comparing existing renewable energy sources, as well as non-renewable sources in terms of costs, qualities and availability. The program will also provide knowledge about efficient energy management, like e.g. dynamic purchasing from different energy sources, and analysis of energy use and emissions.

In addition, the programme will give an understanding of the energy market situation, comparing existing renewable energy sources as well as non-renewable sources both in terms of costs, qualities and availability.

The programme is taught entirely in English and is open to students from all countries. This means that students at the programme will have the benefit of belonging to a truly international group of students, and to enhance their language skills, making them ready for logistical careers in a more globalized economy.

Logistics deals with planning and management of the flow of products, services and information through the multi-level logistical network, starting with the suppliers of raw materials and up to the end users. For companies in the energy sector, reliable and efficient logistics operations are a key factor for sustainable and secure energy supply. Today, in the energy transition environment, amid rising geopolitical tensions, the selection and mix of energy sources are a matter of balancing energy security with economic, social, and environmental impacts.

This programme equips students with analytical and practical capabilities to design, plan, evaluate, and improve logistical processes across traditional and renewable energy value chains, with a focus on upstream logistics operations in energy production. The combination of knowledge and skills for efficient logistics operations planning in addition to competences in energy economics and energy analytics, based on the strong cooperation with the energy industry, makes this program unique.

This degree will qualify you for positions in logistics departments of energy companies in Norway and abroad, including major energy producers and their suppliers, offshore energy operators, and local and national energy agencies.

The international MSc program in Sustainable Energy Logistics at Molde University College – Specialized University in Logistics (HiMolde), includes three modules: (1) courses on economics and sustainability in the energy sector such as Industrial Organization and Competition Policy, Energy Economics and Energy Transition; (2) courses on energy value chains such as Energy Analytics and Sustainable Technologies, Sustainability in Energy Logistics, Offshore Energy Logistics Planning, Upstream Offshore Logistics, and Planning of Renewable Energy Value Chains; (3) quantitative logistics methods taught in Transportation and Distribution, Vehicle Routing, and Discrete Event Simulation courses. The program is held as a full-time program (120 ECTS credits) over two years in Molde, and consists of 90 ECTS credits of coursework, and a MSc thesis of 30 ECTS credits in the fourth and final semester

Structure and content of programme

The program courses use a wide range of teaching and study methods. Standard courses run over one semester with classes once or twice per week, but in some cases a course can include more intensive teaching within a limited time period. Students have homework in terms of exercises, computer lab work, case studies and essays, both individually and in groups. The one-week seminars in the third semester are intensive courses with a mix of lectures, homework, discussions and student presentations. Participation in the seminars normally requires that students have passed the mandatory courses in the two first semesters. Students finalize the degree by carrying out a supervised research project and write their thesis on basis of this. Students enrolled in the program are expected to do at least 40 hours of study work per week. The program is not suited for distance learning.
