  Across the globe, concerns escalate about the effects of greenhouse gas emissions on global climate conditions, implications on global trade from pandemics, and the destruction of ecosystems from the exploitation of limited and non-replaceable global resources. Politicians and businesses alike agree that something must be done, the question is what, how, when, and by whom? What should firms do to reduce their carbon footprint while continuing to secure jobs and profits? When should firms make decisions to transform their businesses given the uncertainty of markets as well as the lack of clear guidance from global institutions? In this volume we ask: Are we actually walking the talk? This volume includes select contributions from the 2022 EIBA conference in Oslo, as well as a number of invited contributions. The book is a tribute to Professor Alain Verbeke who has contributed substantially to the theme of ‘walking the talk’ in the IB community. The chapters in this volume illustrate a broad spectre of research questions and ways to answer them within the IB community that provide evidence that many types of actors are taking – or can take - steps to actually “walk the talk”. The contributions also show, however, that MNEs face considerable challenges to make their ambitions real, which in turn presents a challenge for IB scholarship to develop relevant and robust analytical approaches to cover the transition problems that MNEs face.

  In recent years, increased attention has been paid to sustainability in manufacturing. The sustainability concept is fuzzy, however, which, according to previous studies, may hamper the changes needed to address the urgent challenges of global warming and reduced biodiversity. In this study, we aimed at investigating how companies in the maritime industry in North West Norway interpret and operationalize the sustainability concept. The study suggests that companies’ understandings and operationalizations of sustainability are linked to formal regulations, customer demand, and voluntary initiatives intended to gain legitimacy from stakeholders. Companies’ efforts to disclose information on sustainability performance have increased and supply chain sustainability initiatives are attracting attention, while the cluster organization developing a common vision of becoming a zero-emission industry. Among approaches to addressing sustainability issues, the focus on technology is dominant, which can be related to the industry-specific context. Other initiatives are largely in line with economic considerations. This study argues that more comprehensive changes are needed to address the two other dimensions of sustainability, to accelerate the transition towards sustainable manufacturing operations.

From a logistics perspective, AM of spare parts may represent a safeguard against manufacturing down-time caused by inventory stockouts or delayed deliveries from suppliers. AM of spare parts may lead to reduced inventories and reduced supply chain emissions. This study explores the implementation of AM of spare parts in a manufacturing company within the metal industry. Based on experience using AM on non-critical parts in-house, the respondents in the study emphasize several advantages by using AM for this purpose. The five key findings for when AM are advantageous were when: 1) certain parts are unavailable, 2) some parts can-not be bought separately from their assembly, 3) the costs of spare parts are high, 4) lead times are long, and 5) costs of parts produced by AM are lower than purchased parts. The evolution of AM technology, the AM cost and required competence for utilizing AM technology will be decisive for the configuration of AM supply chains in the future.

  lectronic waste (e-waste) is a growing waste stream. In Europe, e-waste is regulated by the Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) Directive. Each manufacturer or importer is responsible for the end-of-life (EoL) treatment of the equipment it handles, although this task is usually outsourced to producer responsibility organizations (PROs) that collect and treat the e-waste. The WEEE regime has been criticized for focusing on waste handling according to the traditional linear economy, while, in a circular economy, the goal is to eliminate waste. Information sharing helps improve circularity, and digital technology is seen as enabling information transparency and visibility in the supply chain. However, there is need for empirical studies demonstrating the use of information in supply chains to improve circularity. We conducted a case study of a manufacturer, including its subsidiaries and PROs in eight European countries, in which we investigated the product lifecycle information flow related to e-waste. Our findings indicate that product lifecycle information is available, but that it is provided for purposes other than e-waste handling. Actors are willing to share this information, but it is not regarded as useful for EoL treatment since the actors involved in EoL handling believe that using this information could lead to delays and poorer performance in e-waste handling. Our findings contradict the optimistic view of digital technology as improving circularity in circular supply chain management. The findings further give reason to question the implementation of digital technology to improve the product lifecycle information flow as long as the involved actors do not request this information.

  To deal with the challenges of global warming and the loss of biodiversity, industrial companies must respond to stakeholder pressure for producing and delivering their products in a more sustainable way. This can be achieved through transformation of production processes, logistics and business models. Companies manage their operations based on their culture and the traditions in which these organizations operate. These can be seen as barriers to radical change towards sustainable production. However, through collaboration and knowledge sharing industrial networks can assist companies in meeting the transition to sustainability. In this qualitative study of a maritime cluster in the county of Møre and Romsdal, we investigate how small and medium-sized companies in a regional cluster respond to the need for sustainability development. The findings show that the cluster companies possess a unique knowledge and expertise resource that can be transformational and create a new path of development. However, diversification in the cluster may weaken integrity between the companies and consequently reduce communication between them and weaken their ability to innovate.   Over flere tiår har norsk produksjon blitt flyttet fra høykostland til lavkostland, såkalt offshoring. I de senere år har vi imidlertid sett en økende oppmerksomhet rundt det å flytte produksjon tilbake til opprinnelseslandet, kalt backshoring (Gray, Skowronski, Esenduran & Rungtusanatham, 2013). Nyere studier av dette fenomenet har hovedsakelig sett på motivene for å bringe produksjon tilbake til opprinnelseslandet. Til tross for at bærekraft fremstår som en relevant driver for relokalisering av produksjon, har dette i liten grad blitt studert som et selvstendig motiv eller resultat av backshoring (Orzes & Sarkis, 2019). I dette essayet går jeg grundigere inn i litteraturen om backshoring og bærekraft, for så å finne ut hvordan den adresserer sammenhengen mellom bærekraft og backshoring. Transaksjonskostteori og ressursbasert teori har vært de dominerende teorier for å forklare backshoring. Med utgangspunkt i bærekraftsbegrepets tre dimensjoner, økonomisk, miljømessig og sosial bærekraft, drøftes disse teorienes begrensninger. Institusjonell teori foreslås som et alternativt teoretisk rammeverk for å analysere hvordan bærekraft kan spille en rolle i bedrifters strategiske beslutninger om backshoring.   Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to investigate how sustainable practices in supply chains are affected by the COVID-19 pandemic through the lens of institutional theory. Design/methodology/approach: This research applies a twofold data collection approach: 1) qualitative semistructured interviews and 2) secondary data collection that includes sustainability reports, newspaper articles, journal articles, strategic plans, research reports and statements made by authorities and stakeholders concerning decision-making. In total, managers representing six companies in Norway were interviewed. Findings: The study suggests that during the COVID-19 pandemic, companies tend to focus on short-term decisions and economic issues. The long-term focus on sustainability has, however, increased at the cluster level. The research also indicates that the pandemic has led to the development of new business routines that may transform institutional norms. The diversity of institutional contexts can, on the one hand, drive sustainability transitions through pressures and supportive programs but, on the other hand, also hinder the development of sustainability thinking. Research limitations/implications: Institutional factors must be included when analyzing the effects of crises and sustainable transitions. Researchers are encouraged to explore the COVID-19 implications in the form of longitudinal studies. Practical implications: Policymakers can benefit from in-depth knowledge on the adverse effects of an institutional environment on sustainability. For managers, the outbreak of the pandemic can afford them additional time to revise their strategies and seek innovation. The pandemic highlights the need to build more resilient and sustainable systems that will aid managers in responding rapidly during future uncertainties and enduring sustainability trajectories in operations. Originality/value: The paper offers an in-depth investigation of COVID-19 effects on the sustainability of supply chains by drawing on institutional theory. Vi tar utgangspunkt i klyngeteori og teorier som belyser steders betydning, og presenterer en historisk studie av en tilsynelatende vellykket norsk maritim klynge med utgangspunkt i stedet. Vi belyser hvordan steder er viktig for klynger, og hvordan globalisering kan påvirke dette. Denne innsikten sammenfattes i en konseptuell modell. Ved å forankre forskningen i stedets historie oppnår vi en dypere forståelse for hvordan de endringene vi har sett med globalisering av klyngen påvirker stedene og dermed også klyngen.   Sustainability accounting is an emerging research area receiving growing awareness. This study examines the role of digital technology in manufacturing companies’ sustainability accounting. To guide the research, we use a triple layered business model canvas, which supports the accounting of a manufacturer’s performance for the economic, environmental, and social aspects of sustainability. We present an explorative case study of four Norwegian manufacturing companies representing different industries. The findings from the study indicate that while accounting for economic values is well taken care of, companies do not perform comprehensive environmental and social accounting. Furthermore, we observed a shift from a focus on sustainability issues related to the internal manufacturing process to a focus on sustainability issues for the life cycle of the product. Even though the manufacturers are at the forefront with regard to automation and control of production, with extensive use of robots giving a large amount of data, these data are not utilized towards sustainability accounting, showing that sustainability and digitalization are seen as two separate phenomena. This study sheds light on how digital data available from applied Industry 4.0 technologies could enhance sustainability accounting with limited efforts, linking sustainability and digitalization.   Many institutions have considered recording lectures, often referred to as lecture capture, as a response to the call for increased digitalization in higher education. The literature review in this chapter shows mixed results regarding the effect of lecture capture on attendance and exam results and shows only to a limited extent how this technology affects the learning situation. To build knowledge in this field, this study presents experiences from the introduction of lecture capture at a Norwegian university. The findings shed light on the contested space between the attitudes of students, and lecturers, possible consequences of the implementation of lecture capture, and how the theoretical perspective on learning leads to different conclusions.

  Moving towards more sustainable operations is a challenging goal for industries. The growth of interest in corporate sustainability performance has brought attention to the importance of accounting and transparency across economic, environmental and social dimensions. This paper provides an explorative study addressing sustainability from the perspective of industrial firms. The paper presents case studies on the application of the Triple Layered Business Model Canvas, which allows for relevant insight into how firms account for economic, environmental and social values. The findings show that while accounting for economic values is well taken care of, accounting for environmental values are at an initial stage, and accounting for social values are virtually lacking. Thus, the ability for the industrial firms to conduct a sustainability assessment is limited. The opportunities lie in the adaptation of digital technologies providing cost efficient feedback mechanisms for environmental and social values. This can support environmental and social accounting, giving industrial managers a decision management tool to guide their transition towards more sustainable operations, and aligning company goals with the UN Sustainable Development.   This paper explores the implications of the collective identity of a regional cluster on firms’ internationalization. Prior research has established the value of cluster “insidership” through access to knowledge and resources. Through a longitudinal study, we find that cluster identity, through distinct identity claims, provides imperatives and shapes the motivation of firms to internationalize. These imperatives, we argue, stem from cluster identity seen as defined features of regional collectives, extending reference theory to encompass the role of social cues from similar firms located geographically close. The imperatives are particularly salient in the early stages of firms’ internationalization, adding the role of cluster identity to explain the differences between inexperienced and experienced firms in internationalization.   As clusters have increasingly become more globalized, an important question is whether this development changes the knowledge dynamics of clusters. This article addresses how cluster companies’ global sourcing strategies affect cluster knowledge dynamics and innovation performance. The article combines insight from the literature on global sourcing and evolutionary theory with empirical findings from a regional cluster that has experienced the intensified globalization of cluster value chains over the last few decades. The case study demonstrates that the path-dependent characteristics of global sourcing strategies may lead to changes in cluster knowledge dynamics. Building on evolutionary theory and a case study from the maritime cluster in Norway, three propositions are presented, highlighting the path-dependent characteristics of global sourcing. A consequence of this path-dependency is that, over time, manufacturing capabilities will be lost when manufacturing is sourced out of the region in which it was previously located. This may create a barrier for the later backshoring of manufacturing.

  Based on in-depth case studies from a high-cost environment, we identify context-specific aspects as important motivating factors for decision-makers re-evaluating the previous offshoring decisions. This chapter sheds light on the complexity of backshoring motives by adding a meso level, illustrating how case companies’ sourcing decisions evolve alongside the institutional context at a regional level. Further, the chapter provides a deeper understanding of the motives that underlay backshoring decisions and argues that these motivating factors differ from a broader set of drivers that can be found within the existing frameworks of backshoring.   The manufacturing industry has to withstand an increasing competition requiring customization of products, shorter time to market and a transition towards more sustainable operations and products. There is a need for a transition to business models that incorporate sustainability while keeping business activities profitable. Leveraging the advantages of new technologies within the concept of Industry 4.0 is seen as an important factor to maintain competitiveness while responding to the sustainability challenge. Changing the way businesses operate is not easy as is evident from studies that have identified many barriers, including costs, lack of competence, loss of jobs, and process, product or production facilities not suitable for Industry 4.0. Due to these barriers, firms are slow to make a transition towards customized products, shorter lead times and more sustainable operations and products. The commitment for sustainability includes a shift towards Circular Economy (CE) that poses additional barriers like geographic dispersion, product complexity, and lock-in to the contemporary linear ‘take-make-consume-dispose’ model of operation. This paper addresses how manufacturers perceive Industry 4.0, what motivates their investments in Industry 4.0, and what barriers they see in adapting Industry 4.0 followed by a literature review identifying barriers for adhering to CE in the manufacturing industry sector. The study offers empirical insights identifying a need for a roadmap for implementation of Industry 4.0 to support CE as well as providing directions for future research. It aims to answer the following questions: which factors constitute backshoring readiness and how these factors affect the backshoring transition. Design/methodology/approach: Based on theory departure from the organizational readiness field and the emerging field on backshoring, a conceptual model is developed. A multiple qualitative case study is then conducted to exemplify the backshoring readiness factors delineated in the study. Findings: The study indicates that due to previous outsourcing, limitations concerning the availability of firms’ capabilities are affected by ownership structures and that backshoring appears to be time-sensitive. The study delineates three key aspects of backshoring readiness and proposes a comprehensive understanding of readiness as an important construct to enhance successful backshoring. Research limitations/implications: The findings are limited by the nature of this conceptual study, the restriction to a high-cost context and the small number of cases. Therefore, conclusions and proposed recommendations need to be further investigated in preferably larger samples of case studies. Practical implications: By introducing contextual variables that go beyond traditional cost considerations, this work should be of special interest for both practitioners and academics, because the absorptive capacity for the exploitation of cutting-edge knowledge is globally scarce and hence rather expensive in Western countries compared with traditionally low-cost countries. Another practical contribution of this study is the conceptual backshoring readiness framework itself, as it can guide firms acquainting themselves with the resource availability in their home environment. Originality/value: The research defines key resources needed to facilitate backshoring readiness in a conceptual framework developed from literature, which is then exemplified by a case study. This framework conceptualizes backshoring readiness as aspects of requirements to knowledge, technology and supplier infrastructures. Furthermore, the readiness framework developed provides firms and their managers with six recommendations that can enable a rigorous evaluation of a firm’s readiness to embark on backshoring and reflect on the aspect of fitness of its current strategies.   Purpose: Against the recent trend toward reversed global outsourcing, the purpose of this paper is to provide insights on how the internal process can be handled once the decision on reverse outsourcing has been made. The authors focus in particular on in-house knowledge and technology requirements. Design/methodology/approach: To explore the topic at hand, the researchers conducted in-depth semi-structured interviews with five companies operating in two different industry sectors. Findings: Reversed outsourcing accentuates challenges relating to retained knowledge. When embarking on reversed outsourcing, companies need to acknowledge the effort to revive and renew capabilities in order to perform technical operations and advanced manufacturing production. Research limitations/implications: The research is based on case studies in a Scandinavian context. Further empirical research from other high-cost locations is needed to validate the findings. Originality/value: Explorative qualitative research is scarce in the emergent literature on reversed outsourcing. The paper provides practical and theoretical insights into how to handle diminishing knowledge in companies that are re-evaluating their sourcing strategies. It adds a knowledge dimension within the emergent literature. A framework for key success factors and propositions is also provided.   Companies are currently preparing for the fourth industrial revolution, which is envisioned to radically change manufacturing processes, logistics and business models in global manufacturing networks. Previous research have emphasized the need to respond to the changing landscape of the digital economy in dynamic and innovative ways. This study aims at exploring how small and medium-sized companies are prepared to meet this opportunity and challenge. In order to do this we have applied insights from innovation theories and empirical findings from eight companies that are part of two industrial clusters. The findings in this study indicate that even though most of the case companies have ambitions to position themselves in a new digital landscape, they prepare themselves differently. We see that organizations that has progressed furthest in implementing Industry 4.0 related concepts are the ones that make actively use of their external network in cooperation and sharing knowledge. These companies also have managed the balance between exploration and exploitation internally, where employees are both engaged in efficient manufacturing of existing products and product development. Consequently, we claim that both openness and organizational ambidexterity is vital for successful implementation of Industry 4.0.   The accelerated use of technologies has led to what is termed the fourth industrial revolution, or Industry 4.0. It is based on machinery, robots, production lines, items and operators connected via the Internet to each other and to back-end systems, as a part of the Internet of Things (IoT). In this paper, we propose a new IoT Technological Maturity Assessment Scorecard that can assist manufacturers in adopting IoT-technologies.   Global businesses base their sourcing operations and manufacturing decisions primarily on financial principles and metrics. What is often disregarded is the strategic value of domestic locations and contextual tacit knowledge. However, recent empirical work on knowledge flows shows that proximity is crucial. The risk of losing knowledge and important competencies developed through generations within companies and value chains needs to be considered when developing a global sourcing strategy. This chapter sheds light on how global shift-backs, through backshoring are seen to affect organizations that are located in a high-cost country. Based on interviews with managers and key personnel within a specific industry, we explore how companies preserve innovative capabilities when considering closing down (captive) offshore centers or when embarking on a backshoring strategy. The implications derived from the case offers valuable insights into how organizational capabilities could be restored when companies bring manufacturing back.   Building on a global supply chain perspective, this paper aims at developing a conceptual model, which describes and explains the emergence and transformation of industrial clusters over time and in line with the recent development with globalisation of cluster value chains. The model puts particular emphasis on governance as an exponent and agent for change. It incorporates the cluster ‘macroculture’, which links the macro and transaction levels in the cluster, in order to explain cluster changes and transformations. The case of the maritime cluster in North West Norway is used to demonstrate the applicability of the approach. However, the model is applicable when studying industrial clusters, in general, and in particular in emerging economies experiencing rapid growth.   Recently, the interest in the phenomenon of backsourcing has increased, which has been inspired by awareness of the real costs of global outsourcing and the importance of keeping manufacturing in-house or in geographical proximity. However, backsourcing research is still in its infancy. In particular, this strategy requires a successful knowledge re-integration process when organizations employ backsourcing as their new sourcing strategy, which is addressed in this paper. To expand the understanding of backsourcing, a literature review of this phenomenon is given, and based on findings from a case company in the Norwegian shipbuilding industry, we present critical success factors for knowledge re-integration when bringing manufacturing back in-house.

  There is generally agreed that lean pull production principles like Kanban, ConWIP or takt time are successful tools within repetitive production where with one-piece flow, where each job produces exactly what the next job needs, when it is needed and with no inventory in between the stations. To our knowledge, very little research is done on implementation of these concepts within Engineer-to-Order (ETO) environment. This paper presents a case study on implementing the three principles within a Norwegian company that builds complex and highly customized vessels for the offshore industry.

  Engineered-to-order (ETO) networks are dynamic and hard to define, and their planning and control functionalities are commonly affected by the actions of suppliers and customers. Frequently, projects experience delays, budget overruns, and quality defects. Consequently, there is a need for project management that synchronizes engineering and production processes throughout the network. The aim of this study is to develop a project planning maturity model (MMPP) in order to improve project performance in ETO manufacturing networks. Moreover, a multiple case study approach is used to test the applicability of the developed maturity model. The results of the case studies from three ETO case companies show that there is (1) no or low degree of standardization of the planning processes, and (2) there is little or no integration between engineering and production planning processes.

  Even though sustainability appears to be a relevant driver for the relocation of production, this has only to a limited extent been studied as an independent motive and a result of backshoring. This study explores the literature on backshoring and sustainability and discuss some empirical cases to shed light of the connection between sustainability and backshoring. Studies exploring backshoring have mainly applied theoretical frameworks that are based on economic considerations, while sustainability involves issues that may require companies and researchers to take a broader perspective. This study suggests including institutional theory for analyzing how sustainability can play a role in companies' strategic decisions concerning backshoring.

  This paper provides an explorative study on digitalization and sustainability from the angle of industrial firms. The paper presents case studies on application of the Triple Layered Business Model Canvas, which allowed for relevant insight into the field. The findings in this study show that companies do not capture sufficient sustainability data along their supply chain in order to conduct an overall sustainability assessment. The opportunities lies in adaptation of new technologies, which allow collecting data along each phase of life cycle of a product.   Most companies include in their strategy, a commitment for sustainable growth which involves a switch towards a circular economy (CE). A CE transition is hindered by barriers that must be overcome to comply with sustainable growth. In this paper we identify barriers faced by industries, and we propose solutions for how to overcome these barriers. The main barriers were found to be complexities in supply chain, coordination problems, quality issues, little attention to CE in production and design, difficulties in disassembly of products and high start-up costs.   The present study aims at shedding light on how an industry with long tradition in a highcost country has handled the tension between cost efficiency and increasing needs for delivering innovative products to the market when being part of networks at different scales. We argue that in order to stay competitive, manufacturing firms need to be able to achieve ambidexterity as well as crossing firm boundaries for stimulating its innovation activity. Cases from a high cost location are presented to demonstrate how innovation and ambidexterity unfolds in regional and global manufacturing networks.   The phenomenon of backsourcing has gained increased interest the least years, due to awareness of the real cost of global outsourcing and the importance of keeping manufacturing in-house or in geographical proximity. Previous knowledge regarding this phenomenon is, however, limited. In particular, embracing a backsourcing strategy requires a successful knowledge transfer processes as well as re-integration of knowledge. This paper explores how to achieve a successful knowledge re-integration when organizations employ backsourcing as their new sourcing strategy.   Engineer-to-order (ETO) supply chains are characterized by high uncertainty, as they are complex and involving changing customer demands. A way of coping with uncertainty, is to introduce supply chain flexibility. With this insight, we present literature discussing supply chain flexibility, and relate them to supplier selection and relationship development. Based on case studies from the maritime industry in Northwest Norway, we explore how different forms of supply chain flexibility may solve the uncertainty challenges in ETO supply chains.   This working paper presents the results of a survey performed in the Møre and Romsdal maritime cluster in Northwest Norway as a part of the Marco project1. The goal of this survey was to map the educational level, the need of competence of cluster companies, the sources of knowledge, and forms of cooperation in the cluster. The educational aspects of the survey will be presented in a separate report, while the present working paper focuses on global sourcing, sources of knowledge and aspects of cooperation between cluster companies. Prior to the survey, a theoretical study was carried out by the author, and laid the foundation for the preparation of the survey. The main focus of the research has been to study what kind of knowledge is considered important for cluster companies, and from which sources they acquire knowledge. Based on theory, we develop hypotheses concerning the relationship between forms of cooperation and outsourcing on one side and sources and forms of knowledge on the other. The results are presented with accompanying reflections.
